“Excellent hotel but was surprised by booking.com”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012 via mobile

Honestly, i gave this hotel a 5 star rating keeping in mind that it is not a Ritz carlton class hotel. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and very clean with feather pillow. The location is excellent....there is nothing i can say to disparage this hotel EXCEPT.....i booked through booking.com who in the past has had (with me) a stellar history. In this instance, i did not notice or should i say quickly glanced over this particular statement and i quote...."there is a restaurant and free wifi and breakfast are available". I understood that wifi and breakfast was included in the quoted price. At checkout i was told that in fact the breakfast buffet was not included and an additional charge of $17.00 was added to my bill. as you can see the language ambiguous and tricky. A company like booking.com does not need to lower themsleves into using and accepting unclear phraseology. I am disppointed.

This is not your traditional Courtyard hotel. It is a high rise hotel near one of the best shopping malls in Guayaquil and handy to the airport. Very clean, quite and roomy rooms. Weekend "old folks" rate is a real nice perk. We have stayed several time and will always stay here when we visit Guayaquil for any reason. Bilingual staff are helpful and friendly. Staff will glady help with tourist arrangements, taxis, etc.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view. some rooms face the wall of an adjoining building. The front desk will g...

Pros:

1. Rooms are comfortable and clean
2. Free WiFi in room and lobby
3. Nice pool and gym areas for working out or relaxing
4. *Very* helpful staff, who provide excellent assistance. They will answer every question, open doors, hail cabs, etc. - the level of service provided is equivalent to a 4 or 5 star hotel in the USA.
5. The restaurant is quite good - both the food and service are very high quality. After dinner one night, we went to the bar area next to it, and asked the bartender to make a drink that was uniquely Ecuadorian.....she took fresh strawberries and fresh passion fruit, blended with rum, and made a beautiful red and vibrant yellow swirled drink. It was delicious and refreshing (although perhaps not Ecuadorian, per se).
6. Shuttle service to the airport is provided.

Cons:

1. The area that surrounds the hotel is aweful. For this reason, my husband and i were recommended by hotel staff not to walk anywhere from the hotel by ourselves. So we hired a cab for the day to show us around - the cab drove us everywhere - to the new part of the city, to Parque Historico, to the Cathedral and Parque Iguana, to the Malacon (where we got out and walked for a bit), to the hill tops which look out over the city, and to Las Penas. Great day touring the city, and for a very reasonable price - i only list this information here as a con, so travelers are aware that this hotel is located in an unsavory and potentially unsafe area for tourists. To be fair, much of Guayaquil is this way - the new city, however, looks like Beverly Hills.
2. The hotel charges extra fees for housekeeping service - we were charged an additional $8 per day. If you're from the USA, you may be accustomed to having the freedom to leave a tip of your own choosing in your room for housekeeping service.
3. The hotel has plumbing issues - the shower/bath water constantly shifts from cold to scalding hot - likely due to plumbing problems. We didn't mention it to hotel staff because we didn't think it was a problem specific to our room - these problems are usually systemic, and changing rooms wouldn't have helped. Again, to be fair, we've traveled throughout Ecuador and Peru, and everywhere we stayed had these issues.

The staff welcomed us to the hotel from the very first moment we walked in... Someone was always standing at the door ready to open it for us and hail a taxi if needed (definitely recommend hailing one on your own though to save money- e.g. $3.00 vs $5 to go to Malecon).

Some perks we didn't anticipate...
Drinking water in lobby freshened with sliced lemons (also in fitness area) helped us reduce bottled water purchases.

Complimentary coffee in lobby for a few hours in the morning and evening (my mom liked the free cookies set out in the evening too!)

FREE laundry (washing and drying) was a godsend after two weeks trekking through the mainland and Galapagos!

Free shuttle to the airport every half hour

Free wifi, parking

We had a late flight and were able to check out and leave our luggage while we walked around the mall, which is only a block and a half away from the hotel. There's also a McDonalds, gas station ($1.48 a gallon) with coffee shop, and 'grocery store/butcher shop' essentially across the street (this is the best/cheapest place in walking distance to buy snacks and drinks).

All my comments are favorable. Arriving late (11:00PM) from BOS/MIA. I was exhausted. After clearing immigration and customs I executed the airport and was welcomed by a van driver with a sign and my name. I was amazed. I never request the service and it was a welcome site. When we arrived at the hotel, the bell captain was helpful and the desk clerks were attentive and efficient. Answered all my questions about travel the next day.
The room was clean, ready and comfortable. All that one could look for on a travel vacation.
In the morning, checkout was easy. The clerks answered all my follow up question about the bus from Guayaquil to Quito. Got me a taxi and made sure the driver would take me to the correct bus terminal. Then they told me what the fair would be in advance.
In all, this was a very welcome stop on my three week trip to Ecuador.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floors are quiter

I was on my way to the Galapagos and had a one night layover. The hotel had a shuttle service to pick me up and drop me off at the airport at no extra charge (even though the website says there may be an extra cost). Staff was friendly, but the room assigned to me smelled a little funny. Other than that, it's like any other Courtyard. I do recommend it.

My family and I stayed at the Marriot in July 2012 for 4 nights and found the hotel very appealing. We booked through Marriot and received free breakfast each morning which was very good. The hotel was walking distance to two malls and numerous restaurants. The staff were very friendly and the doormen were very helpful with recommendations of restaurants and areas for sight seeing. The hotel offers free shuttle to the airport and when we landed very late they sent a private cab to pick us up at the airport. The kids enjoyed the heated pool which is located on the 16th floor with a wonderful view of the city and airport. Would highly recommend.
