Varaždin was the ancient capital of Croatia. My Croatian friend Renato Horvat who is in university in Varaždin said we must go.
Hotel Istra was built in 1911 under a different name. We were attracted by its location in the very centre of the town and hotel website beautifully describes Varaždin as the town of "music, baroque and flowers".
Together this very welcoming hotel and the historical town deliver a unique flavour.
Staff are very friendly and enthusiastic. Room is cosy, comfy and quiet. There is a breakfast room on 1st floor – again quiet and relaxing. Breakfast is good quality and quantity. I still remember the typical Croatian bread in Varaždin.
One of the highlights in Varaždin was to find and visit Craft Master Vladimir Proskurnjak’s 60-year historical violin-making workshop with the very kind assistance from Damir, Alica and their baby girl Isabella.
The award-winning violin Craft Master was trained to learn making guitar by music school professor, and he went into making violin through sel-learning.
Hotel Istra is a reflection of the forgotten capital of ancient Croatia – “the most beautiful memory remains”.
