I found the Apartmani Trogir by serendipity. We had booked 9 days in Croatia with an open mind on where to go, but flew to Split airport expecting to stay in Split for a few days. I could not find a good hotel in Split and then discovered that the airport is only just outside Trogir. Decided to stay over as we were landing late evening. My first choice place in Trogir was not available for 3 days, but Apartmani Trogir was and boy were we glad.
The apartments were outstanding - clean, comfortable and good sized. We had a large balcony facing south which was bathed in sunshine all day. Location looked a bit unprepossessing to begin with but proved just right. Trogir has the loveliest old town on an island just offshore and you can walk there from the apartment in literally 3 minutes across the footbridge. But you also have three supermarkets within a short walk and a very good open air market which sells everything. Convenience is ultra high.
But it gets better. the owner, Luka Milat is a delightful guy as is his wife. They make you feel very much at home, Miaja Milat makes sure you are packed with a delicious breakfast, and you can ask them anything.
We decided that after a few days in Zadar (north of Trogir) we wanted to go back and it was just as nice in the Apartmani the second time. We were greeted like friends and given an equally nice apartment on the front of the building.
If you want picturesque and old town atmosphere, stay on the island, but if you want a great combination of good accommodation, convenience and (very important in Trogir) ease of movement you can't do better than Luka's place.
By the way, I thought Split was generally a dump and was very glad not to have stayed there. However, Diocletian's palace is out of this world (and a must see), and the old town is interesting. However, you can get from Trogir by boat or car and that was far better in my view.
