“The questions answered before you ask it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2012

From the minute we arrived at Pula airport and were greeted by the chauffeur, to the minute we checked out, we were truly wowed by the experience at this pearl of the Adriatic. Set in a beautiful location overlooking the tranquil Lone Bay, where sailing boats bob gently in the breeze, this modern boutique hotel oozes quiet sophistication. What the hotel lacks in character, it more than makes up for in exclusivity and experience.

Our room and balcony overlooked the gardens and the sea, so we were treated to beautiful views and peace, disturbed only by the welcome breeze that drifted through our ever open patio doors. It is of course air-conditioned, if needed. The room, including bathroom is spacious and well appointed, with all of the amenities one expects from a 5 star modern hotel. Room service and housekeeping were exemplary.

Breakfast is served on the Mediterraneo restaurant balcony, overlooking the pool and Bay. The choice and the quality of the food and beverages is fantastic and includes champagne for those who really want to get their days off to a flying start. We had a daily tipple, topped off with a splash of orange of course...... so that we did not miss out on our regular vitamin C shot!! The service at breakfast and in fact throughout the hotel and our stay was second to none. All of the staff were attentive, friendly and accommodating.

Most nights we strolled into Rovinj for dinner but on the occasions we did eat in, we were not disappointed by the choice of food, presentation or quality. A comprehensive and international wine list complements the dishes to satisfy the most demanding palate.

Our only disappointment during the stay was that you had to secure your place by the pool early in the morning, otherwise the towels were out and stayed there for most of the day, even though on many occasions there was no-one occupying the loungers. This is not a fault of the hotel as they did not encourage it but I think they could have done more to police it and to remove them when loungers had not been occupied for a long period.

The hotel is located just a short walk away from the centre of Rovinj, which is a very delightful picturesque town of old buildings separated by cobbled streets and passageways, interspersed with open squares, where you can relax, dine and take in the wonderful sights. Restaurants are a plenty but you'll find that most of them are serving the same, or very similar dishes. You can however find a wider choice if you explore some of the narrow streets leading up to and around the cathedral. There are some good recommendations on Trip Advisor.

There are plenty of places to explore in and around Rovinj and I would highly recommend you rent a car so that you can enjoy the delights of Istria. The roads are excellent and well signposted. Drivers are very courteous and understanding. The furthest we travelled was a four hour journey to the lakes at Plitvice, which are definitely worth a visit (a real must). Not only because of what you will find when you arrive but also what you will see on your journey. Croatia is a truly beautiful country. We rented a car from Oryx Car Rental, which is just a short walk from the hotel. The team there are very helpful and the car we rented was well maintained with just a few thousand kilometres on the clock.

If you don't like the idea of driving, there a boat trips aplenty from Rovinj, including a free one provided by the hotel. If you fancy a day in Venice there is a regular service from Rovinj but be prepared to get up early as the boat sails at 7am. Mention to the hotel you have an early start and they'll provide you with a complimentary packed breakfast. We made the effort and of course were not disappointed. Arriving in Venice by boat was truly magical. If you go, don't forget to take your passport with you.

I hope that you gather from the forgoing that we enjoyed every minute of our 14 night stay at the Monte Mulini, and our time in Croatia. This is a beautiful country with some of the most delightful people you will ever meet.

Room Tip: Go for the room upgrade option for a room on the second or third floor, where you will get the best...

We arrived at Pula airport, the driver and limo were waiting for us and whisked us off to the hotel. The first impression as you enter the lobby is Wow! The view is amazing and the staff were very helpful. The only downside was that because the flight is so early our room wasnt ready, so we had to wait a couple of hours. When we finally went to our room it was beautiful, it was on the second floor, which I had requested. The view was amazing and spacious room and a huge bathroom, with high quality toiletries. The housekeeper was around everyday and as soon as we left the room it was cleaned. The pool area is beautiful and so clean, every morning we saw the staff cleaning the pool and surrounding area with an attention to detail I have not seen anywhere. There are lots of sun loungers, they are spread over the lawned area, which is huge and around the pool. If you want to be by the pool, you need to get up early and stake your claim! The breakfast was one of the best I have ever seen and you could even have a glass of champagne, which was a lovely touch. There were fresh berries, cold meats, fruits, more or less everything you could think of and also hot food to order. We had omelette or scrambled eggs most days and it was beautiful.
The hotel has a complimentary sailing boat not mentioned on their website. It goes out 3 times a day, a morning cruise and stop at a nearby island, afternoon cruise along the coast and sunset cruise. We went on the morning cruise departing at 10.30 and returning at 2pm, it was wonderful. The boat is a very large sailing vessel and they put the sail up on the way back and drifted along playing some wonderful classical music, it was memorable.
They also provide complimentary bicycles, which we took one morning and took the cycle path along the coast which is very beautiful.
I would definitely stay at the hotel again and recommend it to our friends. The area is also wonderful and the town of Rovinj a short walk away. There are lots of lovely restaurants in town, most serve the same food, but there is enough choice and there are some lovely hidden restaurants in the cobbled streets. The hotel restaurants are excellent and of a very high standard, so you have the choice. We hired a car from nearby Oryx car rentals and spent one week sight seeing. The area is beautiful and very similar to Tuscany. You must visit nearby Bale, a hidden gem, Motovun, the truffle town and Groznjan which is full of Art Galleries and very pretty. We also went to Venice for the day on Venezialines catamaran, which was fantastic. The hotel arranged for a car to take us down and before we could ask offered a packed breakfast as we were leaving at 6am. Definitely First class service.

Room Tip: All rooms are the same but you get a better view if you book an executive room, which is extra cost.

The hotel is beautiful, the view over the pools and sea which greets you when you arrive at the reception lobby is stunning. All the rooms offer similarly fabulous views. In general staff are friendly and efficient though we sometimes had to go looking for pool service and there was also a serious sun lounger shortage during our high season visit with a lot of early morning reservists bagging them for the day. We utilised the free bikes to explore Rovinj and enjoyed the complimentary sunset cruise. The champagne breakfast was excellent. Dinner in the Wine Vault a highlight. Fantastic cocktail bar with a terrace overlooking those wonderful views. I found food and beverage prices to be very fair given the rather eye watering accommodation rates. Given the cost of staying I thought the room provisions were a tad measly - one bottle of water for the whole stay and a small tray of unreplenished dates and nuts. But in general, a very fine hotel indeed and we had a fabulous time here.

We are all human, and people make mistakes. However, more then ever in today's very challenging leisure business environment, delivering first class customer service is fundamental. Mistakes are inevitable but the remedy lies in the unreserved apology and the subsequent review of where things went wrong.

Our previous review about Hotel Monte Mulini was highly critical. The arrival experience was disappointing and it got worse over the following 48 hours. However we are not the kind of people that "put up and shut up". The hotel management took action to address our complaints and now our stay has greatly exceeded our expectations.

So, here it is...

In our previous review we commented that no matter how beautiful, it's the people that are the essential ingredient that make a great hotel and a memorable holiday experience for its guests.

We now understand that on arrival at Monte Mulini that we judged this lovely hotel on a tiny majority of the staff that endangered the hard work, commitment, passion and dedication of the rest of the team.

Duty Hotel Manager, Ana took the time to listen to our complaints and was genuinely anxious to resolve our issues and to ensure that we had a memorable holiday. We weren't seeking compensation despite what had happened but we nevertheless were offered and accepted an upgrade to a lovely top floor suite.

Receptionist Ivan couldn't have been more helpful and has made us feel very at home. Nothing has been too much trouble.

We have spent some lovely relaxing days by the delightful outdoor pools basking in the Croatian sunshine. All of the Pool Team, Dejan, Alenka, Ivona, Leon, Dean (probably the tallest guy in Croatia :-), were simply PERFECT. These people represent the real ambassadors of Hotel Monte Mulini...

Our only criticism is the restricted supply of poolside loungers. There needs to be better management of their allocation and use. They are however the most comfortable sun beds ever!!

- Our lovely maids Marina and Katarina deserve a special mention . Housekeeping standards are quite exceptional. It is unobtrusive and slick. Everything from top to bottom at Monte Mulini is kept impeccably clean and sparkling 24/7.

Stefano, our waiter at the Wine Vault restaurant knows a lot about food and wines. His warm and friendly approach guarantee unforgettable evenings, against an idyllic Adriatic back drop.

- After a stuttering start when we first arrived, breakfast has got better and better. The lovely Nada really can't do enough.

Our Croatian holiday was booked very last minute and we were swayed in no small part by the previous very positive Trip Advisor reviews which are entirely justified. Everybody at Monte Mulini has worked tirelessly in the last week to dispel our initial disappointment and they have succeeded. We will return and will recommend this lovely hotel to all our friends. In our view this hotel richly deserves our 5/5 rating.

I just got back from vacation in Croatia. I spent three nights at the Monte Mulini and the next three nights at La Meridien in Split. Beautiful new modern hotel, all rooms with sea views are quite spacious, clean and comfortably furnished, with a large bathroom. Very comfortable beds. The only one minus is not enough shelves in the closet and part of the clothes must be in the suitcases. Very cool part of the swimming pool, beach towels available without limit. Free bike rental for hotel guests. Very good and varied breakfast. Rowin is a lovely picturesque town with excellent restaurants. Nice and helpful staff. We reported a problem with shower becouse water didn't flow down, and reaction of reception staf was immediate. This was our second stay at this place and certainly not the last. I can not wait for next time.

Highly recommended for a world class experience in this magical town of Rovinj. Really fabulous rooms with luxe bathrooms (which have Rituals toiletries-bonus!).

Not in the old city, so you have to drive to get into the old city of Rovinj.

An easy walk from the busy centre of picturesque Rovinj, Monte Mulini was a great place to start a holiday in Croatia. Our room was smart and unfussy, air-conditioned to the right temperature, with a comfortable bed and an excellent bathtub and shower. All rooms face the bay and have balconies, though ours was too hot for comfort on a July afternoon with direct sun. Overlooking the bay, the hotel's four outdoor pools have plenty of well-shaded loungers, with some spread across the lawns. Only one of the four is really large enough for a serious swim. Swimming in the bay is an alternative, and very popular at weekends with locals (and a few of their dogs). We enjoyed the high quality and varied buffet breakfast (excellent fruit) and the two main restaurants, though the pool cafe did not quite hit the same high notes. The hotel's sister hotels are next-door neighbours, but are set back from the bay and, from the outside at least, seem bigger and less characterful. Choose the Monte Mulini!
