“Good in parts but overrated”

Hotel Angelo d'Oro

This hotel is in the old town of Rovinj which is very picturesque but is not especially convenient if arriving by car because the hotel's car park is some way away. They do pick you up and take you back I know. This is not a criticism in any way merely a relevant point.

Concerning the hotel itself I would make the following comments:

Yes, the staff are very pleasant and helpful and the rooms are very clean but the level of comfort and service in no way justifies the 5 star rating. Our room was large, it is true but the wardrobe was too small to hang clothes in. ( You couldn't shut the door if you put clothes hangers in it.) The bathroom was awkward and the towels ragged and threadbare.

The breakfast seemed to operate in a shambolic way with staff not quite sure what they were doing.

Okay friendly and clean and full of character but the problem is that I know I can get far higher standards for the same price in France, Italy and Spain.

Next time I will rent an apartment.

PS Very good restaurant with superb standards nearby called " Monte "

Stayed at the Angelo D'oro for 3 nights in June '06. Found hotel through Times online Guide (good resource of info). Hotel lived up to expectation as far as location and atmosphere, but I feel for what you actually get it is over priced. Presume this is due to shortage of hotel accommodation in the old town itself. Staff were friendly; on arrival was picked up by hotel shuttle and left car in hotel assigned parking outside town. Room "not quite ready" at midday so went for lunch. On return from lunch slightly surprised to see luggage in reception area still with room still "not quite ready".

Room small and furniture a bit dated. No wireless internet although appeared to be in process of installation.

Ate dinner at hotel one night and frankly very dissapointed. Not nearly up to standard of other restaurants in town. The one recommended for lunch (if I could only remember name, 5 mins walk and Itlalian sounding, reception will know) was excellent. Also the small restaurant almost immediately next door to hotel entrance was very good, only the lady owner was a bit snobby which I put down to coming from Zagreb and not being local.

Hired mountain bike from hotel and cycled south down coast. Apart from caravan and camp sites this is a brillant way to see the coast. I imagine in August the temp could make it a bit daunting though. Found small farm a mile behind coast and had great, simple lunch of cheese, local ham, salad washed down with carafe of local white for tenth of price of lunch in town (drinking/ driving laws?) There appear to be miles of cycle tracks off the main roads around Rovinj and this definitely warrants further exploring.

Overall would love to go back but would not stay at Angelo D'oro again.

“Over-rated”

Hotel Angelo d'Oro

We stayed at the D'oro after recommendations from guidebooks. I think it is over-rated. Rooms are poky - and v noisy if you are on the street side. There is no facitlies such as mini bars and staff were very sniffy when we asked for drinks on room service when we got back one night at 11pm. Despite the fact there were staff there, in the bar, we didn't get our drinks as they were closing up and, I felt, just simply couldn't be bothered. Not the correct attitude for a place claiming to be 4 or even 5 star.

We stayed two nights then got an apartment in the old town for a fraction of the price. On my last visit, i stayed at the only other decent hotel in town - the Adriactia and got a massive sea front suite for 60 per cent of the price!

OK, so it's not a five star in New York. But I don't have a negative word to say about the Angelo d'Oro, given the price. The staff were extremely helpful, the room very comfortable, and the breakfasts spectacular, especially the one on Sunday, complete with sparkling wine. There are a good number of nice restaurants in Rovinj, and the one at the hotel is right up there.

“Mixed feelings”

This hotel gets much hype in the guidebooks, much of it deserved. It is a beautiful old world small hotel with lovely nooks and crannies. Hotel staff are generally very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was very good. However, our room was tight and not very comfortable. No place to hang clothing. Lots of street noise. There are some very good restaurants in Rovinj; we skipped the one at the hotel.
