4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2013

Returned from 2 weeks of total relaxation at Istra. We chose the hotel because its a 15 minute ferry ride from central Rovinj and promised the best of everything.
we found the island and hotel to be fabulous. The pools, pebbly beaches, gym, spa, running and keep fit trail fantastic.
Breakfast and supper buffet self service with free wine and beer at supper. The atmosphere of the restaurant much better suited to busy breakfast. Choice and quality if food really good.
we ate at the other island eateries and had sundowners at the Captains Bar....all wonderful.
great staff, lots of them! We will return!

Room Tip: Almost all rooms have sea view....but avoid above spa and tennis courts

As mentioned in my review last year (17 July) we did return to Hotel Istra with some friends for a holiday and again thoroughly enjoyed it.
The boat trip over to the island to me is the start of the holiday and seems quite magical every time.
We noticed that the hotel has been redecorated and there is some new furniture, but otherwise nothing seemed to have changed.
Check in was speedy, we had a sea/pool view twin room on the 2nd floor
which was nice and clean, bright and airy and had a nice balcony. There is a mini bar in the room from which you can buy drinks, or store your own! There is also a free safe which is good. As of most hotels abroad there is no kettle so it would be a good idea to take a travel kettle with you, the tap water is safe to drink, so no need to buy bottled water.
The bathroom had a bath with shower over, a little on the high side to step into so if you are a little less agile, maybe you should request a room with shower, towels and toiletries were provided, and also a hairdrier (not very powerful).
Food was good, a few strange combinations, but always plenty of things that we liked, both breakfast and evening and again there was white and red wine, beer and soft drinks included with the evening meal.
We ate at Laterna Restaurant one evening and found the food to be excellent very tasty, well cooked and well presented.
The pool area was always clean and we found no trouble getting sunbeds for the 4 of us, although we tended to go over to the mainland in the morning and then visit the pool in the afternoon.
Entertainment was not the best, but still enjoyable and took place mainly outside by the Captains bar.
The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, especially our Thomson rep Giancarlo who went out of his way to be helpful, and after slipping over in the bathroom (be careful as the floors are extremely slippery when wet) he organised a hospital visit for me, and also accompanied me and translated for me which was so helpful.
Incidentally if you are worried about falling ill and being stuck on an island, once the hourly ferry has stopped running, I was reassured that the hotel has it's own speedboat for such emergencies.
Just waiting now for my Husband's holiday dates for next year so that we can re-book, think this says it all!

Room Tip: I would definately recommend a sea view room.

We've just returned from a 7 night stay at hotel Istra........amazing! The hotel is fabulous. Wonderful location on its own island "Red Island" which is serviced by a ferry boat that is free for hotel guests. The ferry runs hourly on the hour from the hotel and hourly on the half hour from the ports in Rovinj. The ferry is always on time and only takes less than 15 minutes for the crossing.
The views from all around the Red Island are stunning! There's even an observation tower within the hotel grounds that you can climb and provides absolutely breathtaking views of the island, the mainland and surrounding islands.
The pool area is clean, always plenty of sun beds available and close to the main hotel amenities. Sun beds and parasols are free of charge, however the towels can be hired for 20kn (Croatian kuna) each and a refundable deposit of 100kn per towel. Be careful if you want a fresh towel each day though as you'll be charged 20kn each time you change it.
The pools are great, one being normal and one being saltwater. I usually hate saltwater pools but this one wasn't that bad. My advice would be to have a shower (which is right next to the pool) after swimming in it to avoid being itchy from the salt once you're dry!!

The food at the hotel is great, especially in the Lanterna a la carte restaurant (which isn't included in your package but not expensive). The buffet restaurant is lovely, light and airy and the food is delicious. There's a great range of choice each day at dinner; breakfast tends to be the same but that didn't bother me at all....breakfast is breakfast!

Drinks are also included in the restaurant which is brilliant value for money! water (still and sparkling) orange, apple and lemon juice, cola, beer and white and red wine are available on tap! I think this is a real plus of the hotel.

We had a standard double room with shower and really liked it. The bed was comfortable and was an actual double bed as opposed to two singles pushed together! The shower was powerful and lovely. The hair dryer is rubbish so I'd advise to take your own! I forgot mine and regretted it. The room was cleaned daily to a high standard and was linen and towels were changed regularly.

Drinks from the bar were not expensive in my opinion. A coke was 19kn (about £2) and a beer or cider was approx 32kn (about £3.50)

The staff were helpful and friendly and did very well with languages.

Overall, the hotel was fantastic and we'll definitely be returning!!!

We have just had a lovey stay at the hotel, it is as described, as from other reviews read the are pros and con but this also depends on your own point of view as this is mine. We had a pleasant trip on the ferry over to the island, which is available hourly and always leaves on time! The receptionist i encountered on our first day i thought was a little rude but i have put that down to very basic concept of how we English like to be treated, our room was a double while adequate for my husband and my self i can imagine it being a little small if you were to stay for a couple of weeks( we stayed for one) we had a mini bar although i only had water it was stocked everyday, as was the toiletries, towels changed and your basic room clean so it was attended daily, the air-con would go off but easily turned on again(probably to save on electricity) lighting was fine and the hairdryer attached to the wall was good enough for a nice dry and style! The cons of the room was that i have a couple of bruises from the shower dial as the cubicle is very small and moving around in it was a squeeze, the balcony while big enough i suppose as we never used it as it we were put right at the back near the tennis court but unable to see anything but a little bit of wasteland this would of been nice if they had bothered to put a couple of pretty trees or bushes in but it was as if we were shoved at the back for having a double room and not paying extra for a seaview and believe me even though it is an island there is a lot of trees and land which does hide the sea from you and unless you drop on or pay extra you will be put at the back really considering we were at a premier hotel for Thompson i felt a little disappointing with this as i thought that their hotels which are all supposed to be classier i would of been given a nice room/view, anyways the entertainment which we didn't really bother about a lot was okay and done by 10.30 so you will need to go to the mainland if you want it a little busier but it was okay for us as we went to relax, the food can not be faulted it was always cooked perfectly, hot when supposed to be and sometimes cooked in front of you if you wanted that particular dish, they had plenty of choices both at breakfast and dinner, yes they did serve vegetables at breakfast but they where in addition and a lot of the Russian and German guest(these were in abundance also!) took advantage of it so it was obviously something they did to try and please everyone's palate. you could also have as much wine/ beer/softdrinks/hotdrinks as you wanted at dinner the same (minus the alcohol) at breakfast and we did not see anyone take it too the extreme just drank while they where eating. You need not run and put your towels on the beds as they were plentiful even though quite a few of the guests did including the English! lovely surroundings and very pebbly and rocky beach so be careful, very clean and the other staff around the property such as the cleaners and the bar staff were all lovely and polite.A Little on the more expensive side compared to other parts of Croatia but i do think that is because of where it is in Rovinji such a beautiful and unforgettable place.

Room Tip: didn't take much notice of the numbers but we were in 260 which was near the tennis courts to th...

We (family of 4 with 2 teenagers) really enjoyed our holiday at this lovely hotel. The rooms and all areas inside and outside the hotel were clean and the staff were helpful and friendly. The food was good, with lots of choice ensuring something for everyone. The soft drinks could be improved. The location on the island was great, a beautiful sea and lots of activities. We had a go at archery, kayaking, a windsurfing lesson, zumba and played tennis. Although busy at times, the pools were well maintained and you could always find a space to relax. Rovinj is beautiful and the boat trip from the hotel seemed to make it just that bit more special. We would happily return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Finding a sun lounger can be tricky by the pool, but we didn't always want to be by the pool and...

They cancelled our reservation three hours before ohr arrival to the hotel and want to give us an upgrade in some other hotel of their group Maistra, in fact instead of halfboard which we booked they offered us a breakfast only and sad that there is nothinh they can do. They have put us into other 5 star hotel but we had to pay extra, they offered us a 50 euro discount. Can you believe this? They should immediatelly change the managerDont go there because yoh dont know if you eill get a room despite reservation yoh have allready made.

Had a great holiday at this hotel, reading previous reviews I really worried the food would be awful. I was pleasantly surprised I found the breakfast to have so much choice and the fruit was amazing. The dinner had lovely fresh salads and cheeses, I found many things to try and enjoyed them all. The beer and wine on tap is a great idea, I found the white wine to be very, very nice.
The hotel is immaculately clean and found staff to be very helpful. The kids clubs and indoor soft play area are brilliant. The pizza restaurant is very good, we went there for lunch everyday and £5 for a large pizza is excellent value for money. We had one night in the Laterna restaurant this was a huge disappointment, food was tasteless and service very slow. The meal was very expensive. I would book this hotel again in an instant, it is a brilliant place. The beds are truly comfy too.

Room Tip: Request a sea view
