“Beautiful hotel stunning location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

We really enjoyed or stay in September althouth the weather was a bit mixed we had one day of rain. The hotel is very clean we paid for a seaview and were in the main hotel building looking towards the mainland. There is plenty of space for all your belongings. We enjoyed the food in the restaurant I am vegeterain and found plenty of choice of vegetable and pasta dishes. We mainly ate our meals in the smaller restaurant which was much quieter than the main restaurant.

On our first night there was a Croatian singing quartet who sang barbershop style ouiside they were very good. At the weekend there was a food and wine festival in Rovinji with live bands in the evening there was a great atmosphere in the town. We even had fireworks on the Island on one evening.

Omelia the Thomson Rep was vey friendly and helpful and really went that extra mile to help us out on our last day when we had a problem at the airport.

.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are the best I would try and get one overlooking the pools if possible.

My wife and I stayed here for a week 18th July 2012 on our first visit to Croatia. The hotel is set in a beautiful location on the Red Island just a short ferry ride over from the pretty town of Rovinj and the regular ferry service is an excellent one which runs hourly from 6.00 am to midnight so you don't have any worries about being stuck on the Mainland. The island is small enough to walk round in an hour a nd you can also walk over to the adjoining quieter Maskin Island for a bit more exploration. This used to be a naturist island and you can stillcome accross the odd naturist which didn't bother us but watch out if you are a bit prudish. The hotel is spotlessly clean and rooms are excellent. We had a lovely sea view and didn't have to pay anything extra for this . ( maybe because it was late in the season). The only real dissappointment was the standard of the food which although had plenty of choices was below average for a 4 star hotel. The free wine and beer with the evening meal on our half board deal did help to make up for this a little though. Entertainment was average too but I have seen worse. The service from most of the staff was friendly and efficient apart from the senior waiter in the bar area who it appeared only wanted to serve our German friends despite repeatedly being called over to us when we wanted to buy a drink. We were totally ignored on a number of occasions. Fortunately his younger colleagues made up for his behaviour. The views from the island and around the area in general are well worth seeing as was our day trip to Slovenia to see the caves and the Lippizana horses. Well worth the money. Look out too for Elvis the coaches tour guide- a real character if a slghtly aquired taste. We loved him though!

The Istra is in a stunning location and is the ideal place to relax and wind down. We spent a week here in September and after reading previous TA reviews, I was slightly concerned about the ferries over from Rovinj but there was no problem at all. The hotel itself is not the prettiest building but the interior is clean and functional and the stunning scenery more than makes up for the 'boxy' 70s style architecture.
The scenery around the island is absolutely stunning and it is lovely to go for a stroll round the island before dinner.
The food is fine; what you would expect from a hotel that serves meals buffet style. If you are fussy, you should be able to find something and it is always a pleasure to leave England and our supermarket produce to get some decent fruit, veg and salads!
The rooms are of a good size but I would recommend a sea view because the small charge is definitely worth it. Tea and coffee making facilities would have been useful but at least there was a fridge in the room. Our bathroom was a bit tired but everything was clean and really that is all you need because in a location like this who cares about the room?
The resort of Rovinj is amazing; The town is a bustling hive of activity with fabulous people-watching opportunities. Sit at one of the numerous harbour side bars with a bottle of wine and just drink in the atmosphere... There are some great restaurants in the town and if you fancy a break from the buffet at the hotel, you won't be short of choices of places to eat.
The trip over to the island on the ferry is quick and pleasurable. I would imagine that if you were staying at the hotel for two weeks, the trips may get a bit tedious, but for a week it is fine and the scenery is pretty enough to keep you interested.
All in all I would recommend this hotel for a relaxing holiday. My friends have already booked for next July after I could not stop raving about the resort. For the amount of money this holiday cost, I could not fault it.

As the boat makes its way from Rovinj and passes the headland, Red Island lies before you - the Istra not the most beautiful hotel - long and somewhat flat, but with the old church tower, the remains of the castle and the beautiful trees and gardens it was something special.
From the outside you could be forgiven for believing that ALL rooms have a sea view as the hotel borders the sea on both sides - but beware, there is one wing where the front overlooks the sea and the back overlooks a scrubby Tennis court area which also houses the hotel generator -- play it safe and pay for a Sea View when you book the holiday as an "upgrade" once you get there will cost you considerably more, (and they ask you to pay in Euros!)
Having paid for our (expensive) upgrade, the room was great - a kingsize bed (two singles pushed together in typical European style) plus a large chair - lots of storage space and the bathroom was a good size with a shower over the bath....everything was immaculately clean and the towels were replaced every day.
The balcony had a beautiful view over the 3 Pools and the open sea beyond - ideal for watching the sunrise over the adjacent Island.
People have commented on the "interesting selection of food" at the Istra - having been to Croatia three times previously, we were not surprised and always found something to our liking with plenty of selection.
The free local beer (Pivo) with the evening meal was a definite winner - and the red wine was"not bad" either.
The main Restaurant was VERY noisy and it was a battle at times to get to the food due to persons not knowing how to queue - but we soon found the smaller restaurant areas to which you could take your food and these were much quieter (and no piped music!)
(Strangely - as well as the free Beer and Wine or soft drinks, free tea is also available with the evening meal, but not coffee).
Breakfast was much the same each day and an additional choice occasionally would have been appreciated - but much praise must be given to the lady behind the counter who cooked the Omelettes to order while also cooking chips, scrambling eggs, making Drop Pancakes, frying bacon, grilling tomatoes, cooking fresh Croissants and .....!!!
The only down side to breakfast was the poor coffee which was somewhat stewed - my tip is to take your own Gold Blend or tea bags!
We chose to swim in the sea rather than in the pools and found the water to be beautifully clear and quite warm - the strip of beach (fine pebbles) was comfortable to lay on with beach mats that we had brought with us - as the beach is outside the Hotel perimeter the sunbeds are not free.
Drinks from the Beach Cafe were reasonably priced - but due to being towards the end of season some of the facilities had closed for the winter and in the evening there was no alternative other than to use the Hotel Bar or to catch the ferry to the mainland.
We can not say enough to thank our Thomson "rep" - Ornela was so helpful and friendly and gave us much information about the areas to visit in and around Rovinj - as another reviewer has commented "nothing was too much trouble for her".
The staff were generally friendly, and if you make an effort to learn a bit of their language, were happy to chat to you - even when on the ferry after their day had finished.
The Ferry was very efficient and always on time - although at times we had to rush our evening meal if we wanted to go to the mainland for a walk round the old town.
Rovinj is an absolute delight - so many lovely places to eat and drink - it reminded us so much of the narrow streets in Italy, we just hope that in the years to come it remains so unspoiled and that the Euro does not make it too commercial.
You MUST take the view from the Church Tower - the steps are not for the faint hearted, but once at the top, the view is fantastic!
We well recommend a coach trip to the hill top villages of Motovun and Groznjan - the buildings are amazing!
We will definitely return to Rovinj........

Room Tip: Pay for an upgrade when booking if you want a sea view

Just been to Croatia for the first time,15th to 29th Sep & stayed at Hotel Istra. It is a lovely hotel on the beautiful St Andrews island. The hotel is kept spotlessly clean,we even saw a cleaner picking up the seaweed on the beach every morning. The food was nice & you had free beer or wine with dinner which you served yourself. The only downside was the German guests tended to stay in the dining room when they had finished eating & keep helping themselves to the free booze. The hotel manager is only going to stand this for so long & the free drink will no doubt be stopped as these thoughtless guests did not buy a drink from the bar when they went back to the lounge area. The room 205 was lovely with a view towards the mainland, which we got by simply e mailing the hotel a couple of weeks before arriving & it cost no extra.Rovinj is a lovely quaint town with cobbled alleyways and lots of bars & restaurants. The day trip to Venice was brilliant and only about £40 each, the boat took 2 3/4 hours.Visit before they go in the Euro & everything goes up. There is another island linked to the hotel island by a walkway & both islands are nice to walk around, ther are pheasants & loads of small lizards.

Room Tip: On an island so all round sea views on 2nd & 3rd floors.

I can only echo the glowing reports from previous travellers, it was just perfect in every way, the best holiday I have ever had.
I travelled alone but with a singles group at the end of Sept. beginning of October so there were less people about and very little traffic in Rovinj. I would certainly choose this time to travel again for that reason, the weather was sunny every day and very warm.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are a must, the view from my balcony was beautiful, looking out over the pool and Mas...

Hotel Istra and the Island it is on is very beautiful. It is a very relaxing place and the views are just breathtaking. The hotel was lovely and the staff work very hard especially those at breakfast and the evening meal as well as at the pool bar, hotel bar and pizza restaurant. The reception staff I feel need a little training in customer service though. Ornela who was our rep was absolutely brilliant. Nothing was ever too much trouble and she was always there to have a friendly chat with and just pass the time of day. She was perfect. Rovinj itself is a beatuful old cobbled town. The restaurants are brilliant and cheap if you are a little away from the harbour. I would reall recommend this hotel and the whole holiday itself. Excursion to Venice was well worth it and gave me a taste of it needless to say I will be returning to Venice. I was in hotel room 231 which was perfect and a lovely sea view although had to pay extra for this but it was very much worth it. Forgot to mention the hotel spa and indoor pool, all superb.

Room Tip: It really is best to pay extra and have a sea view room. 231 was great.
