The best things about this hotel were the food, which was excellent, the staff, also excellent and the location, again very, very good.
The reason for it's 3* rating is surely the unappealing look of the place both inside and out.
We were really disappointed with our room. It was very small and outdated. However we could not fault the cleanliness. We chose a garden view, which was okay, but in hindsight maybe we should have paid a bit more for a sea view.
Overall we probably got good value for money. Croatia is lovely and this area well worth visiting.
It is well geared up for tourism but in a quite understated way.

Room Tip: Higher up is best. Sea view if possible.

Just back (28th Sept) from 2 weeks in Porec staying at the Pical. A bit of cloud the first 2 days but after that it was sun all the way.
Can't fault the hotel or any of the staff - all were excellent. Food was of top quality throughout the 2 weeks with something different every night. The room was good - working tv, enough room for a comfortable stay, nice balcony. All the public areas were spotless and well maintained. 10 out of 10 for the hotel.

Porec is a lovely place full of character and charm. The walk in was an easy stroll - no need for the dotto train !! Lots of things to see and do - every corner turned up something new. Hired bikes for a day to explore the local villages around Porec and found some gems. Also hired a car to see places such as Pula and Rovinj which was stunning, well worth a visit.

Did the Venice day trip - handy hint is to shop around and if you are prepared to book and go the next day you can grab a bargain - we got the return trip for a total of 450 Kuna - half the price we were first quoted when we got there. Also did the Plitvica lakes - a long day but well worth it.

Do not let some of the reviews stop you from going to Porec and the Hotel Pical. Like I said earlier - could not fault the hotel or Croatia.

10 out of 10 all round :)

Room Tip: we had a garden view which was nice and quiet.

Like most hotels in this part of Croatia, the exterior of the Pical (pronounced Pitsal) hotel is an unappealing concrete block constructed when the old Yugoslavia was a Communist country.

Obviously the staff have to work around this, and do their best to make your stay a pleasant one.

The interior is somewhat unusual as other reviewers have described, as the rooms encircle a large atrium space, and the concrete pillars have not been painted, but it is not a major issue.

The bedrooms are dated and need re-decorating, but they are clean. We emailed in advance requesting a quiet high floor room as we were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary during our stay, and were allocated 435. This suited us perfectly as we had a side sea view, & also a view of the old town of Porec. We also had a complimentary bottle of red wine in our room which we thought was a nice gesture.

The food quality was the most disappointing part of our stay. We were on a half board basis - It was very repetitive, with the same options for breakfast every day. The evening meals were always luke-warm, with the same desserts every night of our 14 night stay.

The hotel is a 5 minute walk from the sea - (no beaches, just concrete bathing platforms which are dangerous as the steps are covered in very slippery worn astro turf and algae). The sea although clear is very rocky,so care should be taken when swimming or snorkeling.

Porec is a nice town, but can get very busy with day-trippers from Venice. The other tourist train runs from behind the Marina to the Zelena Laguna (Green Lagoon), and costs 20 Kuna per adult one way. It takes around 30 minutes, and you get to see some of the coastine arlound Porec and St. Nicholas Island.

The boat trip from Porec to the island runs every 30 minutes and costs 20 Kuna per adult for a return trip. Tickets have to be bought at the yellow kiosk at the Marina, but this is not well signposted.

We used the Autotrans buses from Porec bus station to visit Rovinj and Umag. It is cheaper to buy a return ticket, but you can only buy them on the day of departure.

Overall a nice holiday in Croatia, but disappointed with the quality of the food in the hotel.

Room Tip: Room 435 is quiet, and has nice views.

We stayed at this hotel during the first week of June 2013. It was a mini moon for us which was very reasonably priced. Following our wedding we just wanted to chill out, eat nice food and relax and that is exactly what we received from this hotel.
We felt the rating of 3* hotel is spot-on for this hotel. It is not attractive to look at but the food is more like 4*/5*. I’ve stayed in some 4* hotels all over Europe and the food in my opinion at this hotel rates alongside these hotels. There is always a large choice of fresh buffet foods with many foods cooked in front of you while you waited. No problem is too small and the service is second to none - one thing to note there is no lift to the restaurant and that could present a problem to less able people.
The rooms were clean but basic. For a war torn country which is still recovering from civil war I felt it was inevitable that the rooms are dated. Rooms was cleaned everyday and towels changed if you wanted them. The main problem for this hotel is lack of Aircon throughout. I would not visit in high season when temperatures can get very high.
The bar area off the main reception is well presented and drinks can be charged to the room if you wish, taking away the need to carry cash with you. Drinks are cheap, I was drinking Prosecco everyday and it cost me around £1.25 per glass. My husbands’ beer was around the same price for a pint.
We didn’t take our phones on this holiday, and was disappointed that we couldn’t use the Internet as there was no PC, but we managed to go to the sister hotel next door and stream English Football on their PC, much to my husbands relief. There were 300 odd channels on the TV with only 5 English speaking, BBC News, Sky News etc. No sport channels.
The swimming pool area was clean and has plenty of sunbeds. Even though the Hotel visitors are 85% German the swimming pool was never busy throughout the day. The Hotel has a Tennis Academy and most of the Germans were at the Tennis Academy during the day – however it maybe different at other times of the year. There was entertainment everyday in the bar area but it was not for us some of it mainly catered for German visitors. We did not see any of the entertainment team it was probably too early in the season.
It just takes about 5 minutes walking through some trees to get to the sea front. There is no beach but there is some seating and steps down into the sea. A nice wide path has been made along the coast; we walked it both ways for several miles and it is flat and very nicely done.
You can walk into the very beautiful medieval town of Porec which has a lovely Venetian influence. It has many small bars, restaurants and shops along the sea front in about 20 mins or alternatively catch the little Noddy train that runs along the front terminating at the small car park on the out skirts of Porec, the train has a very frequent service with a train stop just to the front of the hotel and costs 10kuna one way. You can also walk along the front the opposite way to Porec, past the Hotel Laguna and you will find more bars, restaurants and a beautiful sunbathing spot. Lots of people hired bikes and rode around the beautiful coastline.
I would recommend the Hotel Pical as a very good value for money hotel with excellent food standards to anyone considering a vacation in this lovely area of Croatia.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 5th floor have beautiful views over Porec

Just browsing the net looking to book next years holiday...and although I have just come back from Tenerife I thought why not look at Croatia/Montenegro as I'd been 20+ years before and loved the country (Yugoslavia as was) as a whole. Shame, as the hotel in Montenegro seems to have gone...but surprisingly the Pical is still standing. As mentioned, it's been 23 ish years since I was there but other than new drapes in the dining room the place doesn't seem to have changed in the slightest.

We had to sleep keeping the door open, too hot and no air conditioning. They rent us (we paid for it!) a dirty old fan to survive. We couldn't open the drawers, the bed was too close. On the other hand, the hotel is in an excellent position. Superb view, salt-water swimming pool, nice beach near pine trees, fantastic breakfast.

We read previous reviews before going to Croatia about the poor standard of the hotel, my wife and I went with an open mind to the Hotel Pical. However, on arrival we noticed that the exterior of the hotel was better than expected. Lobby and reception areas were fine, but once you go past that to the room area, 9 flights of stairs to the first floor (wife cannot use lifts), the quadrangle of landings and doors to the rooms, can only be compared to that of a prison wing, held up by unpainted concrete pillars. Garden view was of a load of trees, not really a garden at all. Housekeeping left a lot to be desired, using the same cloth to clean toilet and then onto the sink and work surface. Cleaner also didn't lock our door and it was left ajar for 14 hours while we were on a day trip to Venice. The food was not to our taste and resembled school dinners, with tables that were pushed together, with no chance of a quiet meal for two, other people enjoyed the food though. No dress code for meals and some people wore the same clothing from the pool for their evening meal, a personal dislike for us. Entertainment was very good down by the sea front, and the bands that played were excellent, although you could hear the music loudly from your room until the early hours of the morning. Aired our views to the Thomson rep, he stated that although the hotel was sold to us as a Thomson 3 star+ hotel, the pictures in the brochure were from 2011 and had been taken out of the Thomson brochure in early 2013 and was now Skytours, so could not expect the same standard, bit of a shock I must say. Porec is interesting but very busy in July. Fontana ice cream Parlour is the best in town and well worth a visit, especially when they throw and catch the Ice cream. Hire a fan in the summer as the rooms are stuffy and have no air conditioning. Book trips to Venice at the Marina as they are about £15 cheaper than through Thomson who only supply a coach to the port. Boat trip to Rovinj from Marina well worth the money, coastline is lovely. Croatia is a nice Country, we may well return to a different part, but would definitely not stop at the Pical again, not our cup of tea, although others thoroughly enjoy it, especially the Germans and Russians who return year after year.

Room Tip: Don't think we can give a tip for a room, only choose a low floor if you don't use lifts
