Arrived home on the 22nd August after a week at The Fortuna. The reviews although mixed all have an element of truth in them. Like many others, we had reservations about this trip after reading quite a few negative reviews before we left...and even tried to change our location within Croatia before we left but to no avail, as everything was fully booked.
However-
The Hotel is in desperate need of an overhaul, I was often tempted to pick up a paint brush myself. The outside looks drab and tired. The decor is typically 70's with dark wood panels and poor orange lighting, but nonetheless clean. The must have for this Hotel is air conditioning. The rooms on the third floor were directly hit by the sun during the day which didn't affect us too much, as we were lounging by the pool at this time, during the night though, the door was kept open and we needed to pay the additional money for the fans. The noise of the fans helped to drown some of the noise from the Disco over in the main town. I am young but found the constant bass of the music-some nights until 5-6am a little tiresome. I did start to get used to it though, and even tapped my feet along to some of the dance tracks I knew!!
The food was surprisingly good considering the size of the Fortuna and the quantity of people they were catering for, breakfast was especially nice with lots of fresh croissants and pancakes-yum.
If you can get a spot outside the main restaurant in the evening then the view is pretty special. Free wine and Beer throughout meal times is an added bonus. It is nice to mix the evening meals at the Hotel with a trip to the town for a gorgeous pizza in one of the many restaurants.
The views from the Hotel are stunning, it has the best location in Porec, overlooking the crystal waters, and the beautiful architecture of the town. The town itself is a pleasure to experience, the market stalls, various restaurants set in the old town and the lively bars all add to a great atmosphere.
We had teenage girls with us, who were slightly bored in the evenings, the entertainment really wasn't up to much, a bad Frank Sinatra Impersonator was as good as it got. We managed to switch off from him and enjoy the service from the nice staff in the lobby bar. A trip to Porec in the evenings was always a lot more appealing than the Hotel Bar though to be honest.
Considering the Hotel is located on an Island it could do with the Bar staying open a little later, and improving the Kids/teenage entertainment. On the staff front, throughout the Main Hotel it seemed under staffed on occasion, and although polite, I wouldn't push the point that they were overly friendly and attentive.
Our Rep Marko was very helpful, and even arranged a trip to Venice for us on a different day to the one advertised. His English was superb, and he really tried to make your stay a good one.
I am glad that I have experienced Croatia, good food, stunning beaches (did miss the sand a little if I'm honest) pretty towns, and I would be very interested to see what the Fortuna looks like in a few years after a much needed refurb.
It does fall below standard on a few areas, but I can see why people are drawn back to Porec.
Note-get up early if you want a space by the pool, there was often a tight squeeze by late morning, and people trying to smuggle all of the umbrellas for themselves, to keep out of the midday sun. The pool is very clean though, and a real sun trap!
