Firstly, visit the region as the Lakes are absolutely fantastic. Worth putting up with the poor food in the area. We stayed at Hotel Plitvice and it's actually a reasonable hotel. Rooms tidy, clean and spacious, great views, clean air. Terrific location for exploring the lakes as the entry point is all of a 5 min walk away. But the food and service in the hotel restaurant - get ready for it. Breakfast is ok, hard to get it wrong. But dinner was something else. You need to go in with either very low expectations or a sense of humour. The food itself is bland, unimaginative, flavourless and boring. We likened it to food served in an old age nursing home. Tasted like food from a tin. The service was shocking - two of the staff refused to help us even though they were standing around doing nothing. And the dining room is cavernous, overly lit, no atmosphere and again feels like a nursing home. Even if they just turned the lights down a little it would improve it by 50%. So don't let the hotel restaurant stop you from visiting - maybe just treat it as an adventure back in time!
