I'd been looking forward to seeing Plitvice as part of our trip to Croatia. The lakes and waterfalls didn't disappoint, both were gorgeous and the colour of the water has to be seen to be believed.
However, to get maximum enjoyment, please read my tips.
When you arrive at Entrance 2, please don't eat at the first restaurant you come to, a self service buffet-style job. We did and it was the worst meal we had in Croatia.
After paying, please take either the bus or the water taxi to the main falls and cataracts. We decided to walk and it was a mistake. Whilst we saw some of the beautiful woodland that we wouldn't have otherwise, we spent the entire time worried about bears which may sound daft but we didn't see a single other soul walking up and we got funny looks from passing bus drivers. It also took a looonnng time (approx 1 hour compared to 5 minutes on the water taxi) and was very hot.
Lastly, unless you have no fear of heights, don't attempt to get from the ferry point with all the restaurants to the Veliki Slap via the scenic route. Again, it takes ages, and the steps down to the base of the waterfall are quite precarious and scary. My legs were shaking by the time I reached the bottom and I couldn't enjoy the spectacle.
