“Not a 4*”

Hotel Meteor

Jun 25, 2008

The Meteor is in a lovely location surrounded by mountains and the beach at the front a very attractive hotel. The downside is the food and accommodation is not comparable with 4* hotels you stay at in Spain, Italy etc, breakfast ok but be prepared to queue for your T and coffee, I suggest you each get 2 cups at a time. Dinner ..... say no more.

I would not say that this was a bad hotel, in fact it was perfectly adequate, but I wouldn’t give it 4 stars, I think 3 is about fair. It has good points and bad points, many of which have been mentioned here already. The location is excellent, on the seafront near to the beach and a short walk to the harbour. The customers were mainly middle-aged people of various nationalities. The staff did seem a touch grumpy but were adequate if not friendly. The bar was pricey and not very inspiring. The breakfast was OK, a large room so no problems getting a seat, but there were often queues for the tea / coffee machine, not a major issue. The breakfast was OK but not very exciting, but was fine for me. On the whole the hotel felt a bit lacking in character, it was clean and tidy but nothing too special. The pool area was OK, a bit plain.

The room we had was only on the 2nd floor and at the back of the hotel, the view was mainly of the mountains which was OK by me, a wonderful view, far better than that of the beach anyway. The room was modernish but a touch small and lacking in storage space. The bathroom was pretty good with a good shower and bath. The balcony was large and the room had air conditioning if it was too hot. We went in mid June and it ranged from fresh to very hot. The bed was very big and comfy and had no problems with noise in the room at all. They could do with more lifts but we were only two floors up and used the stairs anyway. The room had a basic TV and a fridge / mini bar. On the whole it was reasonable and the balcony view great. The standard of cleaning was not good in the room, only really making the bed and replacing towels, not really 4* service.

As for the resorts itself, this was great, it felt quite genuine, the people seemed friendly enough and the food was good. Tried Decima (god food a at a good price) and Stari Mlin (fish restaurant, more pricey but very good), other places were all reasonably good, service was very fast in some places. There were loads of kids out at night, around the end of the promenade where all the souvenir stalls and food venues are, it felt safe for kids, there were no trouble and easy to avoid by walking to a different part of town. The harbour was nice, a great place to stroll before an evening meal.

The beach is OK near the hotel but very crowded and too small, but if you turn right outside the hotel you can go for miles and find more beaches all the way, we often walked for about 12 minutes to the biggest peninsular which was not so busy but still OK for beach bar and food places if necessary. Past this point it gets very quite and another 5 mins and you get to a lovely quite bay, probably the prettiest we saw. Past this point it gets very quite indeed, loads of little coves and bays and loads of nudists too! They are everywhere. Saw many more nudists, (some in no so inconspicuous places!), more than thong wearers, but there were some of those too. The beaches were not sandy and a mat is advisable for your towel. There is a nice beach which is an official nudist beach called Nugal about 40-50 min walk the other way to the main beaches (left from hotel), past the main bay and around the path of the wooded area, keep to the coast, a nice walk and a pretty beach.

We did a boat trip to Hvar and Brac (Bol), got a good price by the harbour, cheaper than though the reps, be warned, if it isn’t sunny it can get cold, we had a boat of freezing people by the end! Also, you didn’t get half as much time on the islands as told.

Walking is good around Makarska, the best walk we did was up to Makar and then follow the mountain path towards Vosak, a good path with spectacular views, we went up to about 700 meters but took a few hours there and back, be warned though, these paths are not to be taken lightly, to go further you need proper walking gear and a decent weather forecast since the weather can change quickly, but it looks amazing. Got loads of great photos up there.

Overall I think Makarska is a good place to visit. Think that’s about it, if more questions or pics please feel free to ask.

We have just returned from a week at the meteor in makarska this not a 4 star hotel as advertised, the food esp was cold the same for breakfast everyday no variation, also the indoor swimming pool looked fatastic but only if you could swim,no good for beginners which was a disappointment.Makarska is very picturesque but not alot going on there espicially at night. i would not recommend going with children..For good food try el toro,,and the marieta by the hotel. Do not go reps trips book your self much cheaper, island cruise well worth it.

“Not Bad But Not 4*”

Hotel Meteor

Just come back from 1 week (5 women 40ish). Hotel not bad had a twin and what we thought triple room but only small bed setee. Ok if small kids but cramped for three women.
Weather very mixed sun and rain for 4days v v hot two days and thunderstorms and rain all day 1 day.
Breakfast ok although had to que along time for tea and cofee. Had "food police" on patrol outside the doors stopped from taking a banana!!.
Went on boat trip to Hvara and Bol. Booked direct with men on the harbour £20 compared to £50 with tour operator. Told us if raining would not sail but on day it did pour down boat still went. (How do you tell 180 people your not going!! )V Beautiful little town but busy as other tripers as well. Sea v v clear and clean but beach they show you looks like sand but isnt, all beaches small pebbles.
Good places to eat. Best is Riva, on harbour front set back a little. Very good food worth that little extra.
El Toro lovely food but very dificult to find. across the road from the boats take road up by picture gallery up side street and keep left. Across the road.
Lido - out of the back of the hotel first one on right ate here every lunch time great pizza.
Cafe oz - best cocktails. out back of hotel turn left opposite childrens playground.
Pool area ok although would imagine v busy at peak season. Also sea water, but there is a fresh water shower at the side.
Down side, the hotel has two lifts but only one working since Feb we were told.
Nice break for a week.

“Loved It!!!!!”

Hotel Meteor

The Meteor hotel is wonderful! My husband and I stayed there for a week in May to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The year before we spent two weeks at the hotel up the road - the Dalmacia but felt that this hotel had more amenities and far better for adults on their own. The only downside was that we felt the balcony - although a wonderful view of the sea and mountains - could have been bigger. The room was large and spotless (we were on the 8th floor though but the lifts were always available).

Makarska is lovely. We spent most days walking and would recommend a walk to Tucepi through the woods (about an hour walk but definitely worth it).

The bars outside the hotel to the right are lovely and you can actually sit on the beach (although pebble and not sand) - but that makes it better when you are eating. We would recommend the Anchor bar for food and cleanliness (as you come out of the hotel turn left and it is about 50 yards away).

All in all I would say Makarska is our favourite place - we love it and the scenery is breath taking.

Oh - and dont take the trips recommended by the couriers to Split. Take the bus - it is so easy and much much cheaper!!!
