Our first view of the Marco Polo, sat high on a promontory overlooking the bay and Korcula old town, was as foot passengers on the car ferry from Drvenik. We hoped we would get our booked room with a sea view & we did! That glorious view over to the Old Town, the harbour and across the straits to Orebic, on the Peljesac peninsula, alone made our stay at the Marco Polo worthwhile. The shipping was ever changing; there were water taxis, passenger & car ferries, yachts, a hydrofoil, catarmarans & small cruise ships for ever arriving & departing under endless blue skies.
We arrived at midday & the always helpful Reception staff arranged for our room (still being vacated) to be given priority.
The bedroom was clean, comfortable, a little on the small side but it had effective air conditioning. Sliding open the full length glass window and opening the shutters revealed that view......
Although the hotel was full, there were never many guests to be seen anywhere, apart from meal times. This gave the hotel a spacious, 'out of season' feeling. The bar next to Reception was always 'dead'. Evening entertainment was virtually non-existent.
I can't say that the staff were overly friendly but neither did we have any complaints against them.
The guests seemed, in general, to dine early (we were on half board) and later diners, like us, often found a shortage of food choice. There was nothing special about the food but we always found the meals at least adequate (we had got an excellent deal on the hotel price after all).
The poolside area always had plenty of space but suffered from the usual shortage of loungers and parasols. The pool overlooked the bay. Pool towels could be hired from Reception.
The hotel car park is small and the nearby streets were crammed with parked cars. The harbour & Old Town are downhill, about 10 minutes walk away.
Water taxis would call at the jetty immediately below the hotel (but only if there was sufficient trade at the harbour starting point). They run to nearby islands and to the main island beach resort of Lumbarda, just up the coast. Passengers are told the times of the last return sailings!
The short passenger ferry trip to Orebic, on the mainland, makes an inexpensive, worthwhile outing.
