Returned yesterday 11 may 2008. What a beautiful island !Scenery stunning. Stayed at the 4* Marco Polo, no complaints, although the hotel was very quiet as it was the start of the season, so I would advise you to go later in may or late august/ early september for a little more "life" on the island and avoid the crowded summer season. I must admit everywhere wasn't quite "open" during our one week stay. The hotel staff were lovely and really helpful. Nice outdoor and kiddie pool, whirlpool not in action but they were working on it! Lovely fitness centre and indoor pool too. Therapies also offered at a reasonable rate. Nice, clean rooms ours had a stunning view, (room123). The food was perfectly acceptable, in my opinion. Breakfast and evening meals were varied and there was always a fair selection (dont forget, you are in a foreign country). If you want a big mac you wont get it on this island! Plenty of bars cafes for eating out and not expensive. Ask in the local travel agents by the old town about trips/excursions, the hotels do their own bookings too at reasonable rates, avoid booking with holiday rep! Antun the hotel taxi driver is helpful and friendly, he offers a lovely island tour in his new Mercedes people carrier, highly reccomended! Use the water taxis, they are fun and provide a lovely view along the coast. Long journey from uk, (no delays either way) two and a half hour flight, two and a half hour coach, 20 min. ferry (lands at hotel) but worth it for a holidy with a difference. Try it and see for yourself! P.S. dont forget to visit Dubrovnick...take the hydrofoil, ask local travel agent for details. Hope you enjoy Korcula (prounounced Kortula) as much as my sister and I did, clean turquoise sea, blue sky, fresh air and so relaxing... Would return to-morrow..... if only!

“Warm and friendly Marko Polo”

Marko Polo Hotel

We have just returned from 2 weeks at the Marko Polo on Korcula. The early April weather was variable but the hotel's a/c and central heating system ensured we steady 24degrees C temp. We arrived at 4am having been badly delayed because the plane couldn't continue from Split to Dubrovnik (high winds). When we eventually arrived at the hotel the night receptionist and porter were welcoming and helpful. As we were on half board a cold meal was waiting for us. The standards of this hotel, on a relatively obscure island, were as good as any in more metropolitan destinations and a lot friendlier.

The restaurant manager is a lovely woman who took a real interest in her job: food, staff and guests. There was plenty of choice of food, even when there were only about a dozen guests. She consulted with guests who had dietary requirements. The wine waiters were good although as seems usual in Croatia, wines are expensive, even locally produced ones. Waiting staff were always friendly, greeted us and managed some conversation in several languages. Quite a few package tour companies used the hotel for island hopping tours and guests were pretty international; this added to the interest for us.

We had a sea view room with a fantastic view of the old town (worth paying the extra). The room also had a sofa (3rd bed), bath and shower. It was spotlessly clean throughout our stay. The maids were friendly and considerate. The computerised system indicates when the room is empty and the electronic keys work. The system looked pretty sophisticated and staff at reception can check on problems remotely I think.

We didn't use the spa or fitness facilities but the swimming pool was very good although the changing rooms didn't indicate which gender should use which one. Both were very clean with good hot showers. It's a good idea to take rubber sandals for the floors though as there are different floor surfaces that occasionally feel a bit slippery.

To sum up. We went for a restful time on a beautiful island and the hotel ensured we were comfortable.

Excellent hotel, friendly helpful staff, clean rooms and public areas.
Food fine, evening meals ok but not inspiring but always lots of fresh fruit. At this time of year there was little option but to eat in the hotel, most restaurants closed for season.
Indoor pool large and clean best one we've ever used, outdoor pool was closed, but would be nice earlier in the year. We would certainly recommend this hotel to all.
For a day out try the monastry across the water about half an hours walk from Orebic and visit the Panorama bar with excellent views to Korcula and the other islands, its quirky but the views are to die for and the home made wine worth a try....dont drink too much if you intend to scale the peak (961m)
good luck

“Modern and clean”

Marko Polo Hotel

We stayed at the Hotel Marko Polo for a few nights. It's about a 10minute walk downhill to the city. It looks like it's been recently refurbished, with rooms looking like at standard 3 star hotel. The room is a little small and the bathroom is also a tad small. But all the items in the rooms are new and very clean. They have cable TV with english-speaking channels and the airconditioning is very effective.

The buffet breakfast is pretty standard and we ended up getting dinner included in our price. The dinners are pretty bad. There are 5 mains to choose from, which appear to have been cooked well ahead of time and are not appetizing at all. The rest of the dinner is buffet, so there's a small salad bar, small dessert bar and some other mains to choose from. You'd be better off eating in the main town.

We were quite impressed with them, as on the morning of our early departure, we let them know in advance that we were checking out at 6am and they packed a comprehensive breakfast for us with bread, cheese, prosciutto/ham, mutliple jams/spreads, oranges and some packet juice.

The quality of the hotel was a lot higher than the others that I had stayed at in Croatia.
