My boyfriend and I stayed at the Amfora for 3 nights during our 2 week holiday in Croatia and Slovenia. Needless to say, we were very pleased with our stay. The hotel was extremely clean and the staff were pleasant. The pool was fabulous and we were pleased that the hotel had it's own beach. Prior to our trip, we had a hard time deciding if we should stay at the Amfora, the Riva, the Adriana or the Podstine. I am glad we chose the Amfora because the Riva and Adriana did not have their own beach and the Podstine seemed a little out of the way. The Amfora is only a 5 minute walk from the city center which was very convenient. However, one of the best things about Amfora was their ice cold air conditioning! I know that sounds odd but Croatia is terribly hot in July and it was always nice to go back to a nice cool room. Overall, Hvar is absolutely fantastic and I would definitely recommend the Amfora to my friends.

I can wholly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Hvar. Stunning view from the room, very stylish and recently renovated. The breakfast was also excellent with fresh fruit and the chef preparing your eggs.

Only downside is that they charge for the sunbeds at the hotel beach - everything else was great.

“lovely stay”

Amfora Hotel

Aug 30, 2008

having read some reviews i was a little worried but nor overly . i am pleased to post upon my return that we loved the amfora. we stayed for 4 nights , and had a junior suite with a sea view and a balcony. our room was lovely , wonderful views, spacious, sky news, funky bathroom ( only minus was skimpy bath towels ! ) excellent room service , large comfy bed , lots of wardrobe space !
breakfasts we enjoyed, stunning views and a large variety of fresh fruits , breads and cooked foods. more than adequate.
pool area is gorgeous. lots of loungers , towels for pool use ( big towels !) a nice kiddies area with a water slide. a couple of meters away is a stoney cove for swimming. jam packed with loungers you can hire to be squashed in or you just walk out of the pool area ,swim , with jelly shoes or some other pool type of shoes so you can walk on the stones ,and return to your spacious pool area !
gym spacious and adequate, best views of the island from here !
a short stroll and your into hvar port. an easy pleasant walk.
all in all we could not fault anything and found service to be very good with everyone we encountered very friendly.
we would love to return

“Great location and amenities, but service is lacking”

Amfora Hotel

Save Review
3 of 5 stars
Zurich, Switzerland
Aug 25, 2008

I gave the 3/5 rating based on the fact it's a 4 star hotel, the service is still lousy at best.

The hotel has great amenities, and they try to do the right things, hosting parties, happy hours, pool bar specials, nice restaurants, and very convenient to have a pool and beach right there. But, as Croatia continues to develop and more big hotels are built, they will no longer have a monopoly and I suspect these guys will hopefully step up their service.

We went in August which is of course the busiest time of the year, but the front desk and concierge essentially laughed at us when we tried to reserve anything early including the faster ferry to the island. Just very frustrating when we arrive and things are booked or sold out, especially the ferry b/c it took us atleast 2 more hours to get there and was more expensive. Then when we were leaving the hotel, they had a shuttle that would take us to the ferries, but it was just chaos. These people do this EVERY SINGLE day, you would think they would have it down to a science and be able to provide you with some guidance or any kind of answers rather than, "just wait here, somebody will be by eventually to get you". (we were told to be ready to board van at 8:15, didnt leave til 8:45 for a 9:00 ferry)

Generally speaking, there's not enough information or flyers or anything of the sort unless it has something to do with one of the companies in their chain, not even a decent map of the city, just a xeroxed copy of a map that outlined where their hotels and restaurants were(nothing more, believe me, we asked). We read that the blue cave was a great tour, but knew nothing more of what the tour entailed, and when we asked, they acted like we were idiots for asking what the tour did for an entire day. Yet, they didnt have much info at all, quoted us the wrong prices by 200kuna, quoted the wrong return hour, so we missed our dinner reservations on the return, not acceptable.

The service has been harped on enough on this board but it's unacceptable for as much as one pays to stay here. It was just one thing after another and to pay for the bons les bain and show up and to be told, sorry, we dont have your reservation, yet it's right in their reservation book. We luckily got some spots on our last day right by the entrance and we saw several people, probably 10 or more couples that day having it out with the hostess who handles the reservations. There again, you do this every day, how can it be so complicated, you make a reservation, you should have a spot.

As for the rooms, they are small, but functional, they definitely tried to be too funky with the bathrooms, water goes everywhere, toilets are weird, but these are all things that are easily looked past as hopefully you wont be spending too much time in the rooms.

Restaurants were good, but much more expensive than other places we ate outside of the hotel chain. Be sure to head to Palmizana Island, grab a drink at Toto's and eat at Meneghello, great food and super service for a small price, comparatively speaking. Also a great place in town was Luna, try the dumplings with truffle cream, man, those were amazing. Also, try out Hula Hula Bar / Bubba Gumps, good, young, fun atmosphere and great food.

Great location and amenities, but even though from other reviews, we expected the service to be bad, it was far worse than what we anticipated.

“Very comfortable stay”

Amfora Hotel

Aug 23, 2008

For a European hotel resort I found Amfora a comfortable, well serviced, bright, airy and welcoming hotel. It's not outstanding and certainly not comparable to the "complete" resorts you will find in places like Mauritius. However, we had an excellent 4 day break there. The pool area is well designed, the outside restaurants are very comfortable with good choice of food and drink (one of the reviews said you could only sit inside, that isn't accurate), the staff are very welcoming, service is to a very high standard and its close enough to Gran Hvar such that you can stroll between the two. Our flight was leaving too early in the morning so the hotel organised a speed boat back to split airport (only Eur 200) which I'd highly recommend rather than the ferry or Cat. Only downside was that the rooms are a bit tight (but better than NYC!) but are well designed - we had a room over-looking the bay which was fabulous. I actually thought the breakfast was a bit disappointing (limited choice) but it was ok since it was so hot. Quite a few people "reserving loungers" with their towels but easily solveable by simply moving them!
