“Great view, great service, excellent meal ... but not cheap”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

Best restaurant view in Hvar hands down. Gariful is an outdoor restaurant. They have a huge awning to handle rain but the weather was perfect when we were there in mid May 2013. The restaurant is on the outermost corner of the old town harbor and the pedestrian only promenade runs in front on two sides. It has a panoramic view of the Adriatic and Hvar harbor. On the inside of the restaurant they have a bar and a couple of tables. The big deal is the floor. It’s a glass and sits on top of a huge fish tank filled to the glass floor with a lot of fish and other marine life including a couple of small sharks. Interesting watching peoples reaction as they noticed they were literally walking on top of a couple of sharks. They serve fresh fish that you pick from their just caught selection. Great service. We went twice. Both times the service was perfect. Food was outstanding. Excellent wine selection though a little pricey to be sure. They steer you to the more expensive wines which I sucked into the first night but after becoming a little more familiar with Hvar wines was able to get a great wine off their wine menu for a third of the price of the first night’s selection. We ordered a just caught John Dory fish which they filleted for us and cooked it to perfection. Damn that was good. I mentioned when I came in that it was our anniversary and wanted some special recommendations. They were great at doing that. When it came time to pay I asked for the check and the waiter asked “Why?” To which I elegantly responded … Huh? He said to take our time and enjoy the evening. A few minutes later they showed up with a desert that .. no kidding .. included a fireworks display of things shooting out the top like a volcano. All conversation in the restaurant and on the promenade came to a complete stop. Then a table of German ladies a next to us broke out singing Happy Birthday to me …which I tried to explain it was our anniversary.. to no avail. Anyway .. good time had by all. Gariful’s is expensive. By selectively picking the wine and items off the menu the price of the second visit dropped by half. Which still isn’t cheap but was very memorable.

“Excellent location, medium food and not so good service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

Really wanted to like this restaurant as it is charming, inviting and has a great position and ambiance. Service and wait time for us and the tables around us was really bad though, 40 minutes for a first course of a green salad, and then the main dish came almost on top of that. Service did not pour more water and did not approach us to ask if we wanted anything during the wait or to offer explanation. Food was ok but not really worth the price and the long wait. We went elsewhere after this night and got better food and service

“Good but really, really pricey”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

Lovely views of the harbour, really good service, extremely expensive though. Our bill came to 580 kuna, which we worked out to be about £70, for 2 people. What we paid for: 1x bottle wine, 1x mineral water, 2x main courses (fish in white sauce I think). What we got free: bread with accompanying olive oil, desert (small cake thing) and a nice gift bag with a brochure and lavender bag.

The freebies were a nice touch, the waiters were very attentive, the fish was amazing, the vegetables were also good but I expect better veg from a restaurant of this price bracket. Definitely appealing to the mega-yacht crowd. At the end of the day, £35 a head for wine and a main is a bit excessive.
