My wife and I have just returned from a holiday in Cavtat in Croatia and Herceg Novi in Montenegro. We stayed at an apartment complex called Bacan Apartments in Cavtat, run by Antun and Natasha. They picked us up from Dubrovnik Airport and took us to the apartment for a small sum (10 Euros each way). The apartments are at the top of the hill leading into Cavtat, but there is a good bus service which stops outside the apartments and will take you to both Cavtat and Dubrovnik. There is also a couple of supermarkets a few minutes walk away.
Cavtat is a lovely resort with many restaurants and bars along a very nice promenade. The beaches, like a lot of Southern Croatia, are not sandy, but there are a few 'beach establishments' where you can hire beach umbrellas and deck-chairs.
My wife had visited Cavtat about 40 years ago and said that it had hardly changed except that the quality of the food in the resturants had improved markedly and there were more cafes/restaurants.
I would recommend this place to those who wanted to visit Croatia but were not interested in a beach holiday.

My wife and I came here in October 2007, loved the apartments so much and the owners, that we came back again in May this year. Antun and Natasha can not have done any more to make our stay a pleasant one. Antun uplifted us at the aiprport for a small fee which is an excellent service he provides. Nothing at all is any touble to them. The apartments are spotless, cleaned and fresh towels every day. Despite what a previous contirbutor wrote, the apartments are very quiet and peaceful, the planes do fly over head but Dubrovnik is not a busy airport and there is no air traffic through the night and not that many during the day. The town of Cavtat is stunning and so close to Dubrovnik. We have recommended these apartments to friends who are booked for September. First class.

We stayed at Apartments Bacan for two weeks in September 2007. Anton collected us from the airport which is only a 10 minute journey by car - this was a very welcome service. We stayed in apartment 4 which is the smallest in the block and it is very small, but we were happy with this, given the price we paid. The apartment was spotlessly clean and the towels and bedding were changed frequently. Natasha and Aton were so pleasant and helpful and predicted the weather more accurately than the met office! We had glorious weather for all but one afternoon during our stay, which was a nice surprise for mid to late September - we both came back very tanned! The aircraft didn't bother us and we didn't really need the aircon. The kitchen was adequate enough that we managed to cook a couple of evening meals although a toaster would have made breakfast a lot easier. The shop across the road was very well stocked and the owners friendly.

A word of caution - the apartments are situated high above Cavtat and the climb up and down to the town is steep with steps (however, I think there is a bus service but we didn't use this).

Cavtat itself is so beautiful and picturesque, there aren't any sandy beaches but we spent many a happy day reading on sun loungers at the concrete beach which has a bar and access to swimming in the Adriatic.

We took the boat trip over to Dubrovnik but weren't all that impressed with the city to be honest. We also took an all day boat trip to three islands which we enjoyed and was good value for money as they cook your lunch on board and all drinks are included. The glass bottomed boat was disappointing as we didn't see many fish but this can't be guarenteed! We still enjoyed the trip as we saw other areas like Mlini and Plat.
It's worth going to Cavtat just to see the boats that moor up - they're something else!

Don't be fooled by all the flashy restaurants on the seafront - the best restaurant in Cavtat is up a side street off the main promenade, it's called Konoba Konavoka, they serve amazing food and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
So would we stay at Apartments Bacan again? Maybe, but not in apartment 4 but more likely that we would stay somewhere more on the level in the town.

All in all we had a lovely relaxing holiday.

My wife and I stayed at Apartment Bacan in Aug'07. I'd booked our room for 7 nights. One of the reasons we chose this place is because the website shows a terrace area. Also it was one of the few apartments that had a/c.

When we arrived we realised that Apartments Bacan is situated on a main road. This meant that the terrace area was quite noisy, with a rather unimpressive view of the local traffic.

The room was absolutely tiny. It had a kitchen & table with a separate bedroom. However this doesn't explain exactly how small this place was......it should have been a studio flat rather than squeezing in an interior wall to make the 'bedroom'

We were a little disappointed when we arrived but we decided that as it was cheap (£45 per night) then we shouldn't really expect too much. The problem really came when we went to bed. The aircon which looked quite modern and seemed to work well became a big problem. It was situated so that it blew directly in to your face when you were lying on the bed. This meant that any more than 10 mins with the aircon on would result in a freezing face and dry eyes. No matter how many times I tried to adjust the slats we still couldn't sleep with the aircon on. As it was August we were unable to sleep properly with the aircon off.

The apartment is single glazed and as you're probably aware Cavtat is located near an airport. This meant that the low flying aircraft woke us up in the morning. In addition to this we could hear lots of noise from the floor above.

The one positive thing I can say about Apartments Bacan is that the bathroom was very clean.

With the noise and aircon problem it meant that we had very little sleep on our first night. We decided in the morn that we had to move elsewhere. The only hotel that we could find with such short notice was Hotel Cavatat (4 nights £95pn). This was a bit average to be honest, although the sea view rooms are quite impressive. For the final 2 nights of our stay in Cavtat we manged to get booked into Hotel Croatia (£110 per night). This was an amazing hotel and would recommend it to all.

It may seem a little unfair that I've just given one star to this place. This is basically because we just couldn't stay there any longer. These problems forced us to move on, which in itself was quite stressful. Not what you need for a relaxing holiday!
