“Very Bad Service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2011

I stayed in Hotel Crotia over the summer. The hotel is huge and feels more like an airport than a hotel. The facilities are fine and Cavtat is nice. I can understand and accept a lot of things but in my book there is no excuse for bad service. At breakfast every morning we came down to the buffet and there would be no tables in the restaurant set up because the staff didn't want anyone sitting at their station. The only thing they had to do was to serve tea or coffee and they did this with contempt. By the end of the week I was walking up to the service station helping myself to cutlery in the drawer and pouring my own cup of tea. It was putting me in bad form for the day. The staff were rude and you felt you were putting them out if you asked for something. I asked for a banana on the first two mornings and was refused eventually on the third morning my boyfriend spoke to the manager and we were able to secure a banana. If these people think they are in the hospitality industry they have a lot to learn. Besides that Croatia is beautiful, the sea is stunning, dubrovnik is amazing, its just a pity the people aren't more hospitable.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to add your comments on Trip Advisor... I am pleased to see that you enjoyed all the hotel facilities during your stay.

On another hand I am very surprised to listen to your comments concerning the staff attitude. If you take the more of 100 revues we received this year, all the guests congratulate us for the great attitude of our staff. I am sorry to see that you are the only exception to the rule and I really hope that this will not prevent you to give us a second chance by coming back in our hotel very soon.

Best regards,

We have just returned from a lovely holiday at Hotel Croatia. After reading some negative revues as well as positive ones I wondered what to expect. So glad we paid extra for a sea view, it was magnificent with a view to die for. The rooms were well maintained and what a lovely touch to have roses (it was our anniversary ) and chocolate on the bed at night.
The room was kept spotlessly clean with regular change of towels and bedding.
The breakfasts were good with so much choice. Evening meals were a little repetative but as we were staying for one week we found lots of choice. My one concern was that the tables were put too close together therefor if another couple joined the table it felt as though they were encroaching on your conversation. If we wanted to share our table then we would have come as a four not just ourselves.
I do object strongly to this as certain people do not have table manners and during our week we had continual snorting over the food from a German guy---If tables were set in twos and further apart then this would not be a problem!
Staff were curteous and at times we felt sorry for some behaviour and lack of manners from our European neighbours! They were very demanding without saying please or thank you !
We had no problems with the lifts even though there were lots of people the first night attending a conference.
My comment is that the Hotel ran better when the people had left, We managed to sit on the terrace most night to eat and this is part of our holiday, the main dining room is souless and bright lighting, not what we like.
Cavtat is such a lovely sleepy cove with just the right amount of bars and restaurants which we frequented at night as the drinks in the Hotel were expensive and if they had been more reasonable then holiday makers would use it more.Yes, we expect to pay more in the Hotel but they were the dearest we have experienced after staying at 5 star Valamar and President Dubrovnic where they were 10% cheaper if not more.
All in all this is a well run Hotel and we had a lovely holiday

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to add your comments on Trip Advisor...

I am so happy to see that our hotel fulfilled all your expectations and that your truly appreciated the friendly attitude of our employees. This is definitely one of the strongest point of our property and we can feel it by reading our guest comments.

Concerning the behavior of some guests, it is unfortunately impossible for us to correct it and I can only lament this fact.

We will be happy to welcome you back to the hotel very soon.

We stayed here for a week this august on a b&b basis, overall I’d say this is a great hotel with great staff, clean and spacious public area, an excellent pool area and access to fantastic private swimming areas on the Adriatic. Our breakfast every morning was excellent with a huge choice from hot and cold buffets. We booked a sea view room and it was well worth the surcharge with a balcony and view that would make you think you were on a cruise ship. 2 negatives from our point of view were the lifts which are inadequate in size when all were working which was rare in the week we were there and the dining options in the evening were very limited and pricey in our opinion. We did eat both in the Spinnaker and Steakhouse restaurants both of which had limited menus and very standard and average offerings especially for the inflated prices charged compared to eating in the restaurants in the town itself. I put this down to the fact the majority of people stay half board which takes priority over the paying restaurants. Over all a very good hotel and I would definitely stay here again if I got a chance to do so in the future. Cavtat itself is a lovely little resort town with a very relaxed atmosphere, a great mix of holiday makers and Croatians with plenty of nice bars and restaurants and I couldn’t recommend it highly enough as a holiday location.

Everything about this place really exceeded our expectattions. Cavtat itself was a far better destination choice than Dubrovnik itself- you can still visit Dubrovnik and the 45 min boat trip is very pleasant.

We stayed at the end of August/beginning of September and had 7 beautiful days of sun. The sea was clear and the views from the hotel were wonderful.

We are already planning on booking a return visit.

The staff at the hotel were very helpful and always eager to please.

On the food, I do have an issue with some reviews on here saying it was poor. What these people probably haven't mentioned is that they probably only ate in the buffet restaurant (which was stillvery good as far as buffets go).The a la carte restaurants was very good, especially The Spinaker down by the beach, which is by far and away the best restaurant in the area in our opinion. It is however more pricey- which is probably why some said they didn't like the food. As they say though, you get what you pay for. That is not to say it wasn't worth it either. The fillet steak was the tastiest I'd had in years. The grilled calamari and the octopus carpaccio were beutiful. With regards the kids food they will prepare anything you like. The Croatian wines were also very nice. As a point of comparison btw- we ate at what was supposed to be the best restaurant in Dubrovnik (as recommended by a member of staff from the hotel), Nautica, which was not even in the same league as The Spinaker.

Upgraded at short notice we were concerned about the steps down to the beach & village. Luckily the hotel has a buggy service so my husband had no problems. A couple of problems with our room were sorted out in less than 30 minutes. Staff always pleasant, helpfull & attentive. Good selection of food & plenty of it. Large outdoor dining area. Cavtat is a lovely village & Dubrovnik can be reached by bus or water taxi in the village.

Room Tip: sea side is prefrable if you like sunbathing on your balcony. the woods side is mostly in shade espe...

We have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Hotel Croatia and had a lovely time there. The Hotel is situated on a cliff with stunning views overlooking the resort of Cavtat. A lot has been written about the steps up to the Hotel, so we were well prepared, although they were still hard work. The Hotel itself is spotless, if not a little dated outside, the rooms were kept clean and tidy and we had chocolate bars delivered to our room nearly every night, which was a nice touch. We found the staff courteous and efficient, without being over friendly and false, Although I appreciate some people like a fuss, we just like being left alone to enjoy our break. The pool was great, again quite (the time of year helped I think) with no loud music or manic animation teams running around. We found a spot round the corner overlooking the sea.
The pool was on the 5th floor we were on the 8th and reception was between the 4th and 5th floor, (stay with me here) so we had to use the lifts and they were something else, there are 3 but it seemed only 2 worked at the same time, when you wanted to go up you went down, when you wanted to go down you went up then down and back to where you stated and they were very small, but to be honest we had lots of fun watching people in the lift get very angry when they didn’t go where they wanted.
Now the food, the breakfast was great with plenty of choice and variety but although it pains me to write, the evening meal was in a word "poor" . The food lacked imagination, flare and often heat. It was the same old meat and fish night after night, the theme nights seemed to disappear after few days, but the continuing theme was mediocrity. Even the soup was more or less the same, beef water or vegetable, the puddings were also very bland. It was if they were clearing out the cupboards before the end of the season. We ended up eating the last few meals away from the hotel. This was the only blot (although a big blot) on another wise excellent holiday

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your comments on Trip Advisor. I am very pleased to see that your stay with us as been an enjoyable experience in term of friendliness of the staff, location, room accommodation and other hotel facilities.

Concerning the food and as you mentioned, we decided to remove our theme night’s concept and we are now working on an international buffet concept which, apparently, pleased the majority of our half board pensioners.

We look forward to see you back soon in our hotel and we thank you again for your constructive remarks.

The hotel this week shone in all facets, with prompt courteous service, extremely nice towels, a breakfast buffet with all the choices, and lovely surroundings of the sea. The front desk resolved each and every call in only a few minutes, and always with a positive outcome. Rates are clearly much below the usual 5star ones, but there is no compromise in service. Free internet to boot, wired in the room, wifi in the lobby area. I call this a 5-star business hotel, and that does not detract from how well it all worked!

Room Tip: you have the choice of three floors below lobby opening to the sea, and i would choose them!
