“Best ever service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

The staff is so friendly, not artificially, like you see in grand hotels but really, heartfully friendly. We arrived very late, tired and the welcoming tee and cookies were god-sent. Even when I met our hostess wandering on the streets of Lijiang, she greeted me happily and it was really nice to see her again in the morning. What to add - better rooms on the second floor - excellent view. Mostly europeans. buy the map in he hotel - its half price than in information kiosk, and you'll really need the map - the old town is the most charming chaos.

I had found this hotel through an internet search, and although hard to find, the hotel sent a person to the main road to lead the way. This place turned out to be a fantastic surprise. The lobby has the feel of a small and beautiful antique shop. The staff are very friendly, offering tea and snacks every time I returned to the hotel. The room is well furnished. The shower floor did pool with water a little bit, but that was the only minor issue. At their branch on Lion Hill, the owner's younger brother owns a guqin. I found this out after asking one of the hotel staff, and he came out and let me play it. Both hotels are wonderfully designed and decorated, with attention to fine details. The manager, Charles, was very helpful in orienting me to the city and arranging transportation where needed.

I stayed four nights in this lovely hotel, on the top floor. Communication in English by email with the owner, Ms He, was easy. The staff is very friendly. The rooms are simple but pleasant enough, especially considering the very reasonable price for such a prime location.

This is the first time I am writing a review without staying there....
I called the hotel directly checking for availability, the hotel staff checked the dates and said rooms are available, she proceeded to ask me my details (name and number etc.) without actually telling me the room rates. And surprisingly enough when I did get round to ask it is a lot more expensive than advertised on the internet! The rates the hotel quoted were between 40-50% more! So needless to stay I did not bother to book this hotel at all. It might be a great hotel but I feel that the first impression is very important.

Lionhill-Lijiang, General Manager at Zen Garden Hotel (Wuyi Yard), responded to this review, March 8, 2013
Dear Fatmeimao, thank you for your review you have published on tripadvisor. We are very sorry for what has happen to you during your request of booking. Pls. give it a minute and try to understand what actually is the reason for the misunderstanding. As first as you have written you have checked some special discounted internet webpages which offer special rates for our hotel. Second you didn't made the booking during the internet and wanted to get the same price by a phone call to our front desk officer. We are very sorry to tell you that only if you book via internet from a very well rated travel agency you can get our special rates. And the reason for the discounted special rate is that we have sold in advance 100 or more bookings per month to the travel agency. That's why we do business with travel agencies via internet. In case you like to order some more rooms in advance we appreciate to offer you special rates. But you can't get special rates by just a phone call. Pls. understand our business policy. Thank you very much and see you next time in Lijiang as our special guest with a cup of tea...................Enjoy your holidays

Delightful place. Comfortable room, lute player in the morning to soothe your tired and travelled soul while you enjoy a lovely breakfast. Good Yunnan coffee (Yunnan/Vietnam are known for their top quality coffee). Gorgeous furnishings. Only criticism is that you can hear every, single sound, i.e. kids jumping up and down on the floors, running about, etc., ROOM TIP: Try and get a room on the top floor if you want peace and quiet away from the kiddies. Otherwise, a truly lovely place. Television did not work in the room but that was not a problem for us as we were not there to watch television! It was all in all a serene environment and the Manager is a very gracious person. They have a computer in the dining room/lobby area for use. All in all, I would recommend this property.

Room Tip: Get a room on the top floor!

We stayed here for two nights of our three weeks South-West-China trip and remember that place very fondly. The hotel interior with the dining room is furnished with antique chinese furniture that made us feel relaxed the moment we stepped in. Breakfast was the best we had on our whole trip with a buffet including fresh fruit, chinese bakery, eggs to your liking etc. The staff was extremely friendly and helped us plan and book our travels for the next days in the direction Leaping Tiger Gorge and Shangri-La. The receptionist here was the only person I met during our trip that would go through the trouble to speak Chinese with me just because I liked practicing, although he spoke a fluent English which was obviously much easier for communication :-) When we had to leave early, they even served breakfast half an hour earlier than the usual 7:00, just for us. One evening we met Yumei, the owner of the place, and had tea with her, a very pleasant time! We can recommend this place without hesitation to anybody looking for a central, yet quiet and cosy place to stay in Lijiang!

This hotel is a real escape from the heaving crowds of Lijiang’s tightly-packed streets. The calm washes over you the instant you pass through the front door, even though it is less than 60 seconds walk from the tourist turmoil. We stayed in the Zen Garden for three nights December 2012 and were looked after extremely well from the minute we were dropped off outside the old city gates (very sensibly taxis can’t drive into the centre of the old town) so the hotel sent somebody to come and collect us and guide us through the cobbled streets and alleys you must pass through to get there. There’s hot pu’er tea to drink and local snacks to nibble on while you’re checking in – in fact while the front desk team check in for you and you simply sit back and take in the traditional décor. Our room was simply, but adequately furnished, with a flask of piping hot water for yet more tea, a fan heater and electric blankets on the beds – absolutely essential in December when the temperature fell to zero and below at night. The bathroom was perfectly fine (despite being prepared for it not to be having read some other reviews). It was clean with constant hot water in the shower. It wasn’t five star luxury, but then you’re not paying for that. It’s a converted courtyard house that does a pretty decent job of putting indoor plumbing in a place not originally designed to handle it. The breakfast spread is good whether you stick with the traditional Chinese fare or opt for the scrambled eggs (or indeed eat both) and the service is so good that the waitress even toasts the bread for you! The front desk team is very friendly and knowledgeable, willing to book whatever you need, arrange cars/drivers, train tickets and offer advice. And in English, just in case you need it. If we ever went back to Lijiang, we’d stay there again.
