“Grandmas' business !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

Going out of old Lijiang is always a good idea as it is overcrowded. The surrounding old villages like Baisha are quieter and live on tourism.
In Baisha, a few nice cafes, souvenir shops, and a few old streets which are nice wandering around. But my favorite was the the good old grandmothers which usually sit below the city sign. It seems they have been there forever and are an institution.
They appear to be selling vegetables but that is not their real business. They just sit there and hang out until a tourist takes out their camera. One of them comes and invites you to take a photo with them with a great smile. You can't refuse the offer, and when you're done, they ask you for a little bit of money !!!

They are so truly irresistible and worth the few seconds you will spend together that it is worth it.

They are apparently running a great business...

“So So”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

Doesn't worth the trip. You can not see so much because only natural light to preserve the mural. The only thing interesting is that you see a long time ago that all ethnies and religions were living in peace and accept each others.

“Nice but not properly lit”

The lack of illumination(rainy weather) didn't allow us to enjoy the murals. The palace itself was beautiful

“Beautiful Quiet Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2012

The mural is ok (I am not an artist and cannot really tell what is in the painting), but the courtyard and the building structures are beautiful! In addition to the mural there are also quite a few statues of acient figures. Unless most tourist attractions where there were a lot of people, this place is very quiet with just a few tourists (most are non-Chinese). You have the opportunity to take photo and enjoy the place without the disturbance of a large crowd.

You can bike to this place from Lijiang Old Town in less than 90 minutes (my 9-year old did it)! If you have more energy you can bike another 6km to reach Li Shui, another beautiful village. My 9-year old had only enough millage to reach Baisha, so we did not continue to Li Shui. You can stop by Su He on the way (there are people asking for 50RMB but do not pay them, just ignore them and continue)

“so, so”

The history of the mural and the impact of the cultural revolution was worth knowing but the mural itself not very exciting. Attractive location and pleasant trees
