Going out of old Lijiang is always a good idea as it is overcrowded. The surrounding old villages like Baisha are quieter and live on tourism.
In Baisha, a few nice cafes, souvenir shops, and a few old streets which are nice wandering around. But my favorite was the the good old grandmothers which usually sit below the city sign. It seems they have been there forever and are an institution.
They appear to be selling vegetables but that is not their real business. They just sit there and hang out until a tourist takes out their camera. One of them comes and invites you to take a photo with them with a great smile. You can't refuse the offer, and when you're done, they ask you for a little bit of money !!!
They are so truly irresistible and worth the few seconds you will spend together that it is worth it.
They are apparently running a great business...
