“A home with a guardian”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

The inn owner has been a great guy! I was in Lijiang for 10 days. I was not able to adapt to the weather and altitude so I had diarrhoea and vomitted every other day. My itinerary was a relaxed one and Lao An has shown great hospitality and great concern for me! Lunch and dinner were not part of the package but he offered to make me porridge almost every day as long as he knows I was resting in my room. He offered me medications to help ease my discomfort and look out for me when I was alone in my own room.

When we are away from home without our family, the worse is to fall sick or meet with mishap. During this trip, he is like a father/guardian to me. I feel safe and secure whenever I wake up from my rest to hear his voice and his assistant's voice as I know if I need help or really need to go to the hospital, he and his assistant are there to help me.

This is definitely not just an Inn, its a home.

The first sight of the Inn was welcoming and homely, this pleases me and having a warm welcome from Lao An, the Inn owner, has added the extra touch of a warmth welcome.

Though the Inn may not have the luxury of a hotel, it is the best way to experience the ancient city of Lijiang and mingle with other travelers. We had a room on the ground level, which was perfect especially when we were traveling with large luggage. Our room was clean and cosy, and surprisingly equipped with a laptop on top of the common amenities of a hotel.

For non-Chinese travelers do not expect a foreign breakfast at the Inn, as they say do what the Romans do, experience their local Chinese breakfast. Daily breakfast include porridge with a few condiments, steam bun, tea-flavoured boiled eggs plus Soya milk.

Lao An, a photographer himself has given us useful tips on best time and places to visit during our trip, this was indeed very helpful and much appreciated. He also runs a travel agency so please feel free to ask him for recommendation on your travel / tour plans.

Would I stay at Lvye An Jia again when I head back to Lijiang? My answer is DEFINITELY YES! In total the Inn has only 6 rooms, so please book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Couple of things keep in mind before you visit:
1 This is NOT a five star hotel, but a nice B&B with nice people and only with $50/day. So if you are expecting 5 star hotel service, go somewhere else.
2 They DO have changing sheets and cleaning room service, but you need to ask for it, and no extra cost.
3 Breakfast is served in Chinese style: porridge, eggs, side dishes, buns and fruits. So if you need something else, talk to the owner Lao An (the owner).

This place located in the south end of Old Town, very quiet place with great view and sunshine in the morning. Towards the north end of Old Town, there are lots of bars and is a lot louder at night. If you took a taxi, just let the driver know you need to get to South gate (Lao Cheng Nan Men) of the old town. From there, only 5 min walk. Since cars can't get in Old Town, and the roads in there is pretty rugged, backpacks will work a lot better than suitcases. But if you arrange the ride through the owner, the driver will help you with the bags to the place. I booked room #5 for 3 nights, we have heated wall (pretty fancy! there are 4 heated glass pieces on the wall, works better that air conditioning in high altitude area) and heated blanket on the bed, so it is pretty warm at night. There is also air humidifier available in the room. In the bathroom, the big light bulbs in ceiling is heating for the bath area, so if you did not visit China before, might be wondering what does that for. Towels are well bleached, smells clean. During the trip, we visited Shangri La for 2 days, Lao An told me they have the carpet cleaning scheduled during that time, so I had the just cleaned carpet after I come back for the last day staying.

Since my husband is gluten-free, I talked to Lao An before we got there. He prepare eggs just for us in the morning without soy sauce (soy sauce usually contains gluten). We also have apple/orange/banana for choice in the morning for breakfast, so it is really not that bad as the other review says. If you need a ride from or to the airport, he will arrange it for you (usually for 80 yuan, paid directly to the driver, and the driver is extremely on time and very patient. Our flight to there is 2 hours late and we were so appreciated he waited for us). Before got to Lijiang, we were visiting other places in China, so it completely slipped my mind until the midnight right before we got there, I texted Lao An and HE RESPONDED, and scheduled my ride right away!!! And during the trip, before we got to Shangri La, Lao An also helped us to book a hotel there, with almost half price that I would need to pay online, if I book it myself. Lao An told me this is the exact place he stayed when he visited Lijiang in 2010, and end up bought the place. We really can see how much he cares about this place and really doing his best to make it enjoyable place to stay. So if you have any questions, definitely talk to him, I am sure he can work that out with you.

Overall, we really enjoying the staying, Lijiang is one of our favorite places in China so far, we definitely visit again.

Room Tip: Room 5 is the largest room and on 2ed floor. But make sure you book early.

I am really disappointed about my stay at Lyve An Jia. Based on its ranking on Tripadvisor I expected a charming place with a great service. Well, the rooms were quite nice (I liked the style). However, how can this hotel be ranked #3 with such a bad and unprofessional service? It started the first day. A guest extended his stay in one of the rooms I booked. As a consequence, I needed to take another room the first day to be transferred in the 2nd one the following day... Not a big deal but not really professional neither. Additionally, information regarding the activities around were not clear at all. Furthermore, the rooms were not cleaned by the staff automatically. You need to ask for it! The breakfast was very poor with no choice. Finally, I suffered from a power outage the last day and was not able to take a shower before checking-out. By walking around, I found out that Lijiang is full of charming hotels. I do not recommend to stay in this hotel. I am sure that there are better options around ;) !

My wife and I stayed at the Lye An Jia recently and found it to be a nice place nestled amongst other inns in Lijiang. It is located on the Southern side of the town, and not the easiest place to find so best call the owner in case you get lost.

The Inn has it's own courtyard which was nice and has character, and the open corridors on the first floor provided some interesting views of roofs around. We didn't get a chance to speak much to the owner, but he was friendly and greeted us well.

Our room was large and comfortable, with a raised double bed over a fully carpeted room (good in cold weather) and equipped with TV and PC as well as kettle, humidifier, room slippers and electric blankets. Bathroom was decent with good hot showers and hairdryer.

The downside is the Inn is next to the back alleys which people use, and you will hear (or get awakened by) loud chattering in the late hours of the night from your room. Then again, that's Lijiang for you so if you are troubled by noise bring some ear plugs!

The Inn is also quite a trek to the main square of Lijiang, so allow time to and fro when you go out, but overall quite a nice place indeed.

We were put in an annexe of the Inn as they evidently regularly overbook on the back of their Trip Advisor popularity. Our room ($63/night) was nothing like advertised and smelled strongly of drains. When we complained his amiability and english, which other reviewers have complimented on, had vanished. Certainly no chance of a refund for the inferior room.. Our rooms were shabby and had an open plan bathroom so no way to escape the smelly drains. We stayed for 2 nights but the room was not cleaned at all during our stay (evidently they forgot). This was supposed to be a top rated Inn for our last couple of nights in China and ended being our worst experience of all our many travels in China. A backpackers hostel at hotel prices. There are certainly far better options in lovely Old Lijiang. Not recommended.

We found the inn through trip advisor. The owner, Lao An, understands enough English, and can write / read basic English. Lao An is originally from Nanjing and he bought the place in 2010 and remodeled it, after he himself traveled to and fell in love with Lijiang. We booked the hotel only by email. He trusted us. When we arrived at the beginning of the alley, he helped us carry one of our roller suitcase.

Our room has 2 tatami style beds. It is clean, with complementary wifi and a notebook computer in the room. It has TV (which we never watch). Bedroom has hot water and is generally clean.

Lao An suggested some places that we never would have thought of, such as Wenhai (a wide open grass field with horse rides led by Nakhi guides). He has a travel agency that arranges trips to Shangrila. We opted to rent our own car, which was recommended by him, and booked our own hotel (it's actually quite easy with the internet and the boom in hotel construction.

Every night Lao An holds court and tells stories to his guests over tea until it's time for bed. (In Chinese). Breakfast is served in the communal living room. It's basically xifan (porridge) with the condiments, and buns (bao). During breakfasts, we met other guests from China and Taiwan, mostly professionals, many of whom spoke English pretty well, and we exchanged information and stories.

Lao An let us use the washing machine (thank God). When we had to travel to Shangrila (Zhongdian), his admin-cleaner-secretary-cook Xiao-zhan helped us hang the laundry out to dry.

If you are from outside of China and feeling adventurous to stay in a small hotel among other Chinese guests, this is an excellent place. The location is in the main old town, but far enough from the crowd (thank God) so you can get peace and quiet and rest at night.
