“the central point of the old city that must see”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

a beautiful palace that is unfortunately not quite as historic as it once was (following distruction by an earthquake) but really beautiful and impressive considering that it was just rebuilt a few years ago. this is much more modest than places like summer palace in beijing, but just as impressive especially with the beautiful mountainous background. Behind the Jasmine garden, there are steps you can climb towards the top of the mountain where you will find an active monastery with great views of the old city (in classic feng shui, built facing the city with mountains at the back, water emanating from the center outwards)

“Best Historic Attraction in Lijiang”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

If you are a history buff, this is a must see. It is the best preserved example of a traditional Chinese palace that I have seen in China (including everything in Beijing and Nanjing). The designation of Lijiang as a World Heritage site together with a Chinese government support and promotion of the Naxi culture in the regional has resulted in a masterful recreation of a late Ching Dynasty prince's palace. See the Wikipedia entry for more details of the Ma family's domination of the region under Chinese patronage over 300 years.

I strongly recommend a trip up to the top of the palace (a lot of stairs) as the views from the top portions of the palace are extraordinary (as are those from Lion's Gate at the top of the hill above the palace). The walk up and down the hill on which the palace is build will be the best 3 hours you spend in Lijiang (and a lot more interesting that walking through the overly commercialized and touristy streets of the Old City).

“A chinese palace, visit one without many tourists”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

You can go to huge palaces in China: forbidden city, the summer palace, but all of them will be full of tourists. In Lijiang you can visit a, although more modest, palace with much less tourists and its size should make it easier to get how palaces in ancient china were structured: official quarters, family quarters, etc.
I've been there twice and I discovered new things every time :) So it is small but quite rich already.

“Best view over the old town !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

Great Palace with very nice park. You can walk all the way to the end and as it goes up, you will have the best view over Lijiang's old town.

Also, as you go back to the entrance, don't miss the gardens on the left where they use to put up their "domestic helpers".

“Worth the tour.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2012

Although I was the only westerner with this tour, there are plenty of English descriptions of the rooms and history of Mufu. Well worth the tour.
