This hotel was fine, but I unfortunately have to break with most of the other reviewers and say that it wasn't excellent.
I really liked the location, inside the old town but on a quiet side street. We never had any problems with noise. It was also very close to the south entrance to the old town, meaning it was easy to meet drivers nearby if we needed transport out of town.
The public areas are very nice, and the setting in a courtyard home is lovely. The room was attractive--really nicely decorated, with very comfortable furniture. The wifi was accessible in our room, and it worked well. The toiletries were nice and the bathroom area was stylish. You have to throw toilet paper into the trashcan, but that is the price you pay for staying in a courtyard in the old town. However, the plumbing in our room was very weak, and the toilet wouldn't flush properly. We spent our entire two days fiddling with it and talking to the front desk about fixing it with few results.
In the winter, temperature was also an issue--it was so cold when we got to our room that we couldn't sit in there. They gave us a space heater, which we immediately starting running, and though it helped a bit over time, it was not very effective. However, I will say that the heated bed was one of the best parts of the room and made sleeping there very cozy.
The breakfast was less than ideal. It had very little to offer those seeking western-style breakfast--a pre-cooked fried egg that had been sitting on a hot plate and some toast. But the Chinese breakfast wasn't tasty either--we were unimpressed, and a lady from Shanghai we were sitting with declared the noodle soup awful. You also have to go out of the hotel for the breakfast, taking a coupon from the front desk to exchange for the meal. One day when we came back from an early morning walk and asked for our breakfast coupon, the front desk attendant asked if we had already eaten breakfast. Seriously, they were accusing us of trying to cheat them out of a second terrible breakfast! That was the moment when, added to all the hassles over the toilet, I became really disillusioned with their customer service.
Overall, the hotel was fine, and I think we would have liked it better in the warmth of spring or summer, at a time when the plumbing was working. But our experience was far from perfect.
