“Lijiang, China - Where to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2011

Walking through old town of Lijiang and the crowd, it was not easy deciding what to see and where to go because too many street people trying to sell tours. We finally found a hotel in the old town alley call "Garden Inn" where we can relax and plan out trips as we stayed in Lijiang for 4 days. We found Garden Inn very helpful and relaxing because the staffs there were very open and friendly in telling us about Lijiang's attractions. They even book all our trips with discounts and ordered taxi or mini vans for us on a demand. That saved us alot of time. Strongly recommended if you are an English speaker.

Room Tip: We like the family room in the front. The loft rooms on top are great too.

This hotel is a real nice place, just 5 minutes from the Lijiang hustle. The dorm beds we booked were very firm but ok, and so was the public shower and toilet. The service however was outstanding. They were willing to book a train ticket during our hike through the Tiger Leaping Gorge. We only had to pay a small deposit. The overall atmosphere was just really nice and made you feel welcome and home.

We stayed two nights there. We each paid the same price for our respective double rooms. However, the rooms were of different quality.

Mine was newly renovated, clean, nicely done up. I liked many things about it – the softness of the bed (unlike the hard – really hard – mattresses that seem to be the mattress of choice of the Chinese), the spacious ensuite bathroom, the skylight, the decor.

My friend had a room that looked like it badly needed a makeover. It was not in a decrepit state though so it was still functional.

Plus points of the hotel include its location and the friendly staff (except for a certain Miss H who was none too warm). The hotel was at the edge of the town, so it was refreshing to get back to relative peace at the end of a long day battling the crowds. The staff were very helpful too; they could assist in making bookings (for tours, transport etc.). We found May, the young lady boss, particularly delightful – knowledgeable, capable, chatty, easy-going, passionate about her work.

We stayed here twice in the deluxe double room. The views from the room and outside balcony were fantastic. The bed was comfy and there was high pressure hot water around the clock. What we loved most was the quiet yet central location of the hostel - it's only about 5 minutes walk from the chaos that is Lijiang Old Town and 10 minutes from the waterwheel and main bus stop. We really wouldn't recommend staying in the Old Town itself unless you love being surrounded by large groups of tourists, visiting repetitive souvenir shops (hearing the same song played over and over again) and enduring a fair bit of noise.

The staff were also fantastic; they promptly organised our train and bus tickets and they were more than happy to help with directions to sights around Lijiang. They also allowed us to store some of our luggage here for five nights free of charge. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: The deluxe double room has great views

Lijiang is a great place with great opportunities for day trips and seeing some of the best sights China has to offer. However the Old Town itself can be pretty overbearing. It gets packed full of tourists from the afternoon until late at night. It's loud and busy and you will probably feel like you want to escape after a very short period of time. The Garden Inn in the perfect place to do this. It's very close to the Old Town but in a very quiet area so you feel removed from the craziness. The staff are excellent and are always smiling. May knows the area very well and can help you organise any trips or transport you need. The hostel itself is clean and comfortable with a nice courtyard and great views from the 1st floor. There is a very homely feel to the place which in my opinion is much better than the big impersonal hostels you often get. Highly recommended.
