“Elegant and comfortable house with great views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

The Zen garden Lion yard is set in a lovely location above the old town. Very calm and serene place with fish ponds, open seating areas for tea and a guqing player on weekend mornings with enchanting Chinese music. Adequate breakfasts, great coffee and at tea time pu'er tea with homemade jams and biscuits. Very friendly staff and there is always someone who can speak some English (to help with my pitiful Chinese!)
At night you can hear the music from the bars but it stops at 11:30 and it's not too bad. (It would be the same anywhere around here though.) Super comfy beds- not too hard!

The only criticism I have is that this place is quite expensive (RMB800+) compared with other similar inns. For a family of 4 needing 2 rooms it can be quite costly.

On a separate note, it irritates me that all the food recommendations seem to be for Western style food, try the Yunnanese food, it's delicious! We ate at 3 local places, one next to the canal close to the Prague cafe (also very good) and the food was very good. Why go to KFC when you're in Yunnan?!

Pro's: nice location on top of hill that is close to town and away from the noise.
Decent breakfast, nice building and fairly comfortable, well furnished room.
Cons: zero value when compared to other choices.
staff are completely clueless about almost everything. restaurants, touring or excursions....clue less. The biggest joke with westerners is that KFC is the best meal in town....and there was a reason why KFC is packed...it was the best meal I had in town.

The Zen Garden is a pretty place with a wet courtyard, fish ponds and a number of open salas for quiet contemplation, calligraphy, tea drinking etc. The rooms are prettily furnished and well equipped with a greater range of amenities (toiletries, hairdryer, fruit baskets, wifi) than I might have expected in such an out of the way town.

The location is a five minute walk uphill from the old town, which means there are lovely views from the courtyard and terraces, though not from the rooms, which are quite closed in and cosy. They are a little removed from the noisy bars downtown, which theoretically is an advantage since noise pollution in Lijiang after dark is quite extreme - but since noise travels up, if you want to sleep before 11:30pm, when the bars are compulsorily gagged by local ordinance, you will need earplugs.

Breakfast was limited but the eggs were good.

Though most of the staff had limited English they were all very helpful and quick to bring in linguistic reinforcement if we were unable to guess what was happening through mime and context.

Since the place can be difficult to find (most shop assistants and bar staff are not local so couldn't help direct us even in Mandarin, either get written directions in Chinese and english or ask the hotel to arrange a car for you. The price was little different from the cost of hailing a cab at the airport.

Room Tip: Our room was on the upstairs terrace and was very nice. Our friends on the courtyard level found th...

Spent two nights here. Very nice views over Lijiang from the hotel, which is uphill from the old town. The main building is charming although the bedroom and bathroom were quite ordinary. Breakfast was a disappointment with a very small buffet of unappetizing choices plus eggs that are made to order. We found the hotel acceptable but certainly not memorable in any way.

Convenient location close to the town - although it is up a hill, so not good if you have difficulty walking up hill. Lovely chinese-style decor, and reasonable space in the room. The staff were very friendly, however their english was limited. A tip if you are staying here: it takes at least 5 minutes before you get hot water from the shower.

3rd trip to Lijiang and the first time stay at Zen Garden Hotel (Lion Mountain Yard). They have a sister hotel with the same name, located inside the Old Town.
The property is small but everything is very well appointed. The staff were amazing, very helpful in everyway they can. The hotel is located on the top of the hill overlooking the Old Town. Try the tea service in the afternoon. Local snacks are offer with tea for the guest to taste for free. The enviroment of the tea room and the view helps me and my friends unwind after a day of walking.
The only downside of this property is that there are a few very noisy bars located at the foot of the hill and the sound just travel up. The noise will stop at 11pm, but if you planning to tug in early you better have a pair of ear plugs ready. I had my in-ear headphones.
At the moment the road leading up to the hotel by car is closed due to the construction of the Aman Hotel behind Zen Garden. Make sure you ring up the upon arriving so the can arrange for your bags to be transported up.

The hotel is perched on a hill and the view from the second foor was nice. Roomwise, the premium room was ok (bed was old). However, the noise from the bars at the foot of the hill can still be heard every night. It didn't bother us as much. What did was the shower - one of the nights we came back from a day of hiking only to find the shower not hot at all. Waited an hour as manager suggested, still no luck. Turned out we were the only guests that night and somehow they shut down the boiler during the day. After a few back and forth with the management, including a writeup to the senior manager/owner, we gave up and managed to take showers in lukewarm water.

Given the top rate this hotel demands, you'd expect a notch above hostel quality, which includes the availability of hot shower every day. Not the case when we visited. Besides, breakfast was basic, and the room was freezing cold.
