“Beautiful resort with breathtaking views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

We spent one night in this hotel after spending a few nights in another hotel located in the heart of the Shuhe old town. Given the reputation of Banyan Tree, we did all the day trips from the other hotel and decided to spend the entire afternoon at the resort after checking in.

The resort was fantastic. As you enter, you see the pavilion besides the lake perfectly aligned with the archways, with the Jade Dragon mountains in the background.

The best part of the resort was its location and the overall landscaping and decor.

Electric buggies took us to our Superior Suite where we were treated to yet another great vista from the balcony.

The room was large and comfortable with contemporary Chinese decor. There is a separate living area which can be separated from the bedroom via panel doors, although I would imagine that few would want to close the panel doors since a view of the Jade Dragon mountains was available directly in bed.

The bathroom was airy and brightly lit with twin sinks, and separate shower and bath. Amenities were of excellent quality.

My only complaint are that the bath mat seemed to be a bit incongruent with the otherwise good quality of furnishings. It was a plain white towel.

The rain shower was also disappointing. Rather than a strong downpour, one got instead very thin water sprays going in various directions.

Service levels were also excellent with the staff being exceedingly responsive.

Overall, an excellent experience but with some slight imperfections.

Room Tip: The superior suites give views of the Jade Dragon mountains.

What a horrible stay! I have been to many banyan tree hotels and all of them have lived up to the standard, sadly except this one. The 3 bedroom villa was alright. The service was the worst. Unfriendly staffs, long respond time, ridiculously small twin beds. In one of the bedrooms, the twin bed room was very big with a ridiculous small bed (90cm*200cm) which make you cant even move while asleep, but then you also have three large bedside tables in the room.

We went to the restaurant the first night and when we were going to order drinks, they ran out all sort of alcohol, as in there were no wine, no Chinese liquor at the restaurant at all. Very disappointed about this five star hotel restaurant.

I will never go back to this banyan tree again and I advise you to stay away too.

Dear Zoe W,

Please accept my sincere apologies for what appears to be a very big disappointment for you. Unfriendly staff and long response times is certainly not the norm in our property so I would appreciate further details.

As I do not appear to have any report of your concerns, I would very much like to speak with you further about this stay and request that you contact me directly on nigel.fisher@banyantree.com

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely

Nigel Fisher

have stayed in a few banyan tree and this is one of the most beautiful setting property. The Pavillion and the snow mountain backdrop is postcard perfect. The food in western restaurant is just average but prices not too expensive as I had dinner and breakfast there. The selection for breakfast is quite good but taste wise average.

The room is large but I'm surprised that for a 5-6 star hotel, the quality of the bathroom floor mat and the toilet and tissue paper is not of good quality. Not soft enough. The rain shower was abit hopeless as the water is too fine. But the room is well equipped and the Chinese tea set and Wei Qi provided is very apt with the snow mountain backdrop.

I had the spa treatment and it was indeed relaxing but it's not cheap as one couple 3-4hr treatment is more expensive than 1 night's stay.

Dear Guest,

Thanks you for taking the time to give us your candid feedback regarding your recent stay at out property.

I have noted your remarks about food and beverage as well as the comments regarding the bathroom. We will certainly take a look at the shower as they are supposed to function well, and not in the manner you describe.

Happy to hear you enjoyed the spa treatment.

We look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you back at some time in the future.

Kind regards,

Nigel Fisher

Banyan Tree is beautifully situated in a quiet area of Lijiang, walking distance to the new and old town of Shuhe, which I found more quaint than the old town of Lijiang. Our room on the 2nd floor of the villa had an awesome view of the peaks of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Our 2-bedroom villa was like a townhouse. We stayed 4 nights, enough time to tour and enjoy the cuisine. The restaurants served very good food, one western and the other Naxi cuisine. The service was very good. William, our guide spoke good English and toured us to the ancient city of Lijiang and Mu Residence. (I advise an early morning tour to avoid crowds), Baisha ancient city and the Impressions Lijiang show. William was very helpful because on our way to Ringha via Tiger Leaping Gorge, we called him several times to speak to our driver on what we wanted to do and eat along the way. People don't speak English in these places, so it is helpful to bring a translator/guide when you go around. I was expecting though more spa facilities as there is a gym. All in all, Banyan Tree is a lovely place to stay in.

Lijiang is one of the nicest places in China, and Banyan Tree is walking distance from the Old Town, which is very convenient. Although close to the town, it is still secluded enough so that you can unwind and enjoy the amazing view of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

To our surprise, we were upgraded to one of the garden villas, which is a stand alone villa with its own garden and plunge pool. The room was very big with a nice bathroom and a separate living room.

The service was great and the staff was very attentive to our needs. However, there was always the problem of the language barrier and it was hard to communicate with some members of the staff. This is a problem we had to face in most of China, specially the smaller towns and cities. This can be stressful some times, but there is usually always someone who is more fluent and can help translate.

The hotel was nice but it seems to be a little bit rundown. Many of the furniture in the public spaces and the room is quite old and some of the pillows are even ripped. Hopefully they will undergo renovation soon as there is a lot of new hotels being opened in the area.

In general, we did enjoyed the property and would recommend it when visiting Lijiang.

Dear Javier M,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback regarding your recent stay in our property.

I have noted your comments regarding the language difficulties and although we try to hire and train our staff in English, it is a continual process.

The property is slated for some refurbishment this year but there is no excuse for ripped pillows and I will certainly follow through on this issue.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back at some time in the future.

Beautiful, immaculate resort. Superb service, with attention to detail. I particularly enjoyed the daily incense/essential oil ritual in our room, and the surrounding greenery with the flowers in bloom! And of course, the breathtaking view of the mountains behind the pagoda.

It was a lovely stay. The relaxed atmosphere, the warm and friendly staff and their sweet attitude towards our 7-year-old daughter, the superb hotel design and comfort made our holiday memorable, albeit short.
We will certainly come back to Bayan Tree.
