Dali Regent Hotel is rated a 5 star hotel but I will give it only 3.5 stars in western standards. The hotel is situated at the entrance of the Old Town and is 15 minutes walk to the Foreigner Street. It is a huge hotel ground wise. We stayed 3 nights here. The staffs are fairly nice but speak very little english and they will have to ring someone who speak fluent english for you to describe/understand what you/they mean. If you ring the reception, ask for someone who speak english and they will transfer you the person. The hotel room is big and has internet connection, wireless is provided at the lobby. Sheets are replaced clean everyday even if you tell them not to. The aircon is not really an aircon but is only a heater. Apparently, Yunan Province which Dali is part of has a cooler climate, but if you are staying on the 3rd floor which is the top floor during the summer, the room is very hot! I don't think they have roofing insulation. They keep telling us that the aircon will work at 9 pm but boy oh boy it is not!. My wife got sick the first night because she couldn't sleep. They sent us a "cooler" which is actually an evaporator but they dont' have ice and just use water and it is effectively an electric fan! I found other rooms on the same floor whose windows are all open at night when I opened our windows. I reckon you'll be right. if you're on the 1st and 2nd floor.
Breakfast is included but only few choices and is the same everyday mostly Chinese food. If you are not choosy, the food can tie you up till lunch. There are plenty of small restaurants along the streets going to the Old Town.
They can arrange tours/bus/plane tickets for you but I found that their price is a bit higher that the others at the Old Town. Canvass first if you have time, if not go with them, RMB is cheap anyway.
There are 2 shops inside the hotel which sells almost perfect knock-offs. Haggle the marked price 60% lower and you'll be amazed at how much you'll get it for..
In summer, ask for lower floors which are have cooler rooms.
