“Great hotel - great service - great people - great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2013

The name can fool you - named after the Linden family. But it is a great hotel designed from a large private residence at the edge of beautiful fields and a very short walk to the old town of Xizhou which is a wonderful and non-commercialized little village. The rooms are beautiful and modern. The staff, which includes a few Americans, can't do enough for you. The food is excellent especially when you consider the isolated nature of the hotel. The hotel provides some evening entertainment (a local musical group) and provides all meals since there you are a long distance from other choices. The best surprise is the beautiful farming fields right next to the hotel. It was time to harvest the garlic and the views of the farmer and their harvest (along with the smell of the garlic) was a constant joy and a continually changing view. The Lindens should be congratulated for a great hotel.

Thank you, we are always happy to have guests who enjoy getting out of the busy cities to spend time with us in our tiny village. We feel this is a side of China many visitors never visit, and we strive to help you enjoy and understand it. We are constantly improving our facility based on guest feedback, and appreciate all comments. We look forward to welcoming you again to the Linden Centre.

Warm regards,

Just returned from 3 weeks in Yunnan, 4 nights of which were spent at the Linden Center. Beautiful location in the midst of green fields of garlic scapes and beans on the outskirts of (mercifully) non-commercialized Xizhou Town, mountain range to the west and lovely Erhai Lake to the east. Traditional Chinese 3-courtyard mansion built in the late forties. Beautiful second-floor open veranda in the back, perfect for sipping wine at the end of the day and watching the sunset do spectacular things to the sky and mountains. Really excellent staff and service, wonderful, fresh food and very laid-back and welcoming atmosphere. The delightfully quixotic Lindens were in residence making sure that all went smoothly. Seemed to appeal during our stay (Chinese tomb-sweeping holiday) especially to expats and anglophones working in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Only problem was noise from lots of small kids running around, screaming, especially in late afternoon. There are signs throughout the property asking that quiet be respected and maintained but these were ignored and not enforced -- so a certain measure of patience was required. But this is a quibble. If you are planning on visiting the Dali area (and Dali itself is, dare I say it, not worth the trip, although the area certainly is), this is the only choice, and you will not regret it.

Room Tip: Rooms are around one of three courtyards. Rooms on the south side don't seem to have outside wi...

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave such helpful comments. We are very fortunate to be based in one of the few surviving family mansions from China’s past, and out on the veranda you mention, we are now making local wine tasting a daily free activity for guests. Please note that all guestrooms have outside windows, and we try to keep all areas well lit without disrupting the atmosphere of the building. This is a historic relic protected by the National Government. As much as we too would like to add more windows, it is not allowed by The Heritage Bureau. We are sorry you found the children of other guests somewhat distracting, but as you mention, we do ask guests to be mindful of their neighbors, and we will make a greater effort to ensure maximum comfort for everyone. We work hard to minimize noise, and we are renovating the dining room and adding a bar annex which will keep noise to one end of the building and ensure guests a quieter night’s sleep. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Linden Centre.

Warm regards,

We stayed in the Linden Centre for 3 days at the beginning of April.
This place is not only a beautiful hotel but provides a unique experience. The owners, both Americans btw, have managed to become an active part of the local village community and let their guests participate in it. This way, the traveler has a chance to dive deep into the local 'real' life. They organize tours, music performances, even take you into local houses... all authentic stuff, not the usual tourist things!
The hotel itself is an old Mansion House which the Lindens have tastefully renovated to a perfect condition, with a lot of attention to details. They have realized their dream, and that's how they run it, too. They are perfect hosts, to an extent that one starts to forget that one is a paying guest (rather visiting friends).

The Linden Centre is a wonderful experience - part hotel, part cultural portal, part home away from home. It is perfect for families, couple and for solo travelers. Exceptional accommodations combined with excellent food and an endless set of opportunities to explore China and Chinese culture from cooking classes, to Chinese painting, customized hikes, biking, tours of the town, trips to old town Dali, etc. Xizhou is also a wonderful community, near but not in the chaos of Dali. Thank you Jeannie and Brian for providing such a phenomenal home away from home. The breakfast each morning included everything and nothing could match having a glass of wine on the terrace at sunset admiring the mountains.

My daughter and I stayed at the centre during our 10 days trip in Yunnan, China last week. We had a wonderful time in Xizhou area. The Xizhou morning market, cheese and rice noodle making, biking to the Erhai lake, weishan ancient town, and weishan daoism mountain, they were all great activities for me and my teenage daughter. Our room was clean and very comfortable. The roof top terrace was a great place to enjoy the sunset with a drink. The staffs at the centre are great and made our stay very memorable. We will come back for another visit soon.

The Linden's have fashioned an incredible experience in China. Everything about the place is so correct, and so comfortable. The staff are particularly welcoming and proud to share their experiences and love of China, and their enthusiasm for the way this former merchant's house has been so beautifully restored.

The highlight was waking early and seeing the full moon still visible over the surrounding mountains in the early morning sky . When we rushed up to their gorgeous roof top terrace to take in the full lunar experience, we were treated to a second unexpected surprise....in the east the sun was just making its magnificient entrance over the fields of green. Seeing the sun and the moon at the same time sums up the magic of this place. The heart yearns to stay forever!
