“Pleasant enough but we wouldn't stay again”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

We stayed here for 3 nights on a tour of Sishuan Province with a group of friends. The receptionists didn't speak much English so they called for a lady from one of the lobby shops to help. It is a huge reception with a couple of shops selling reasonably priced souvenirs.
Our room was a good size with 2 good sized single beds which were very comfortable. In the room there was also a large flat screen TV, dressing table and mirror, two chairs and a small table. Tea and coffee making facilities were also provided. The carpet had a number of stains on it.
The bathroom was fairly small with a shower over the bath. The grouting was mouldy and there were some hairs on the floor which didn't belong to us.
Free wifi was only available in reception but we had to walk around to try and get a decent signal.
Breakfast was a large buffet but very few items for western tastes. It was a struggle to find enough food that we liked to enjoy it.
We ate dinner in the restaurant on all 3 nights. The food was dull on 2 nights and OK on 1 night. If we hadn't been on a tour we would have gone to one of the many restaurants in the area instead of eating here.
The hotel is a 10 minute drive to the Jiuzhaigou National Park which was our reason for being in the area. It's a very beautiful park with lots of wildlife but sadly lots of visitors.
It's unlikely that we will be in this area ever again but if we did we would try one of the other hotels in the area.

stayed there for 3 nights in the deluxe king room. the lady at the front office ( seems like a senior staff - she had a different uniform ) was not friendly at all...not a smile on her face. From her expression, it seems like we were a bother to her ! since this is our first time in jiuzhaigou, naturally we had questions to ask and there was some language barrier...the other staff were ok, but they had to refer to this lady and she certainly didn't look pleased.
breakfast was not great - so i skip breakfast after one day.
we had dinner there on the 1st nite cos we were tired, picture looks good on the menu but taste is so so. there are directional signs in the hotel showing - coffee/salon etc.. - but none of these exist in the hotel. room wise - worn out carpets. not all rooms are the same. i had rain shower in my room, but my friends had bath tub ( but their bathroom wasn't too clean) . i believe the ones with rain showers were the upgraded rooms. we were happy with the free wifi although it wasn't very stable and we also did not have wifi on our last night. They blamed it on the weather..hmm. on our last day, we called front office and was informed check out was 12 noon, some of us were there at 1150am but there were others still in their rooms and the sulky senior lady was hurrying us and telling us that if don't check out at 12 sharp, she threatened to charge us another room night.

This hotel is only 3 stars relative to the western standard. It is a good walk to the park, however you can catch a taxi for 10 yuan if you don't want to walk.

Heating only turned on from 5 or 6 pm to midnight with only 1 setting. There are plenty of blankets if you are cold.

No WiFi or cable Internet in room. There is 1 computer in lobby which cost 10 yuan
Very limited English at the reception but it is every where in Jiuzhaigou area. Breakfast serve til 9am. However, food is either cold or runs out if you turn up after 8.30am and don't expect too much either because there won't be too many choices for western food.

We paid $160/night, booked through Ctrip ( it was the cheapest at the time). We stayed for 3 nights from 7 to 10 th October 2012.

Here are some tips for the Jiuzhaigou visit that will help if you are thinking of travelling here and can't speak Chinese.

1) You can do the trip yourself without paying for tour. Just book hotel and flights. The Jiuzhaigou national park is self do, you really don't need a tour guide.

2) Taxi from Jiuzhaigou Haulong airport is ~85 km away from the hotels near the park. It should cost around 200 to 250 yuan fixed price. Don't let the taxi driver charge you by the meter like what we did because it will cost around 400 yuan. Just negotiate before you hop on to the taxi.

3) since not many can speak English, you should get someone to write in Chinese sentences such as how much to hotel (should get the hotel name, address and phone number in Chinese as taxi driver can't read in English. We found that having the phone no. Of the hotel handy also helps everywhere in China because quite often taxi driver could not find hotel, they can ring up and ask.

4) Haunglong national park is worth a visit if you are in the area. We found that it is as pretty as Jiuzhaigou national park. 1 day should be good enough for Haunglong park. There is a bit of walking (~6.5 km all up if you take the cable car up and walk down), however it's doable as it's mostly down hill.

5) Jiuzhaigou national park is bigger, 1 day is also enough but if you want to spend more time and take it easy, 2 days is more than plenty. Jiuzhaigou park is easy to do as the buses take you all the way to the top and drop off every single point of interest on the way down. Each stop is around 1 to 4 km, If you can't walk far then just take the bus. Bus runs every 2 to 5 mins so don't worry if your health is not too good. The park is in the shape of a Y, the right hand side of the Y is where all the pretty spot.

6) Cost forJiuzhaigou park is 210 yuan + 90 Yuan for bus inside the park ( highly recommended). Jiuzhaigou park sells corns and instant noodle inside, you can eat there or bring our own food if you like.

7) Haunglong park sells very little food, BYO lunches is highly recommended.

8) Entrance fee to Huanglong park is ~ 200 yuan + 80 yuan for Cale car (highly recommended)

9) Haunlong park is 59 km from the airport or 135 km from Jiuzhaigou. Takes 2 1/2 hour from Jiuzhaigou or 45 min from airport.

10) last but not least, it cost 500 yuan fixed to Huanglong park return from Jiuzhaigou ( price should be negotiated and remember don't let them charge you by the meter because it will cost a lot more.

Best time to visit Jiuzhaigou is the first 2 weeks of October ( autumn ) because you will see all the pretty leaves change color.

We stayed 2 days in Jiuzhaigou, caught a taxi from Jiuzhaigou the last day to Huanglong park, leave our luggage in a taxi. The taxi driver waited at the park till 5pm, pick us up from the Huanglong park and drop us off at the airport for a 7.40 pm flights. All this cost us 500 yuan by taxi. If you want to do the same, make sure you have all of these translate into Chinese on a piece of paper and have it ready to show it to the taxi driver.

Good luck and enjoy your trp in China. If you want review on other part of China, please read my other reviews.

The Jiuzhaigou Grand may have been "grand" in it's day but definitely no longer lives up to it's name and is not a hotel for westerners.

My wife and I spent two nights there and were glad to leave.

- Quiet

- Price was exorbitant at approx $140 a night (probably not worth half that)
- virtually no staff spoke English; not a complaint but a hindrance all the same
- carpets in bedroom and main dining area were dirty and need of a good clean
- very dim lighting in bedroom
- WIFI only worked intermittently
- Breakfast was almost soley Chinese food and not to our taste, apart from the noodles which were 50/50, and one of the cakes.
- tables in dining area were large circular ones with seating for 10-12 people and a lazy susan in the middle ie not really suitable for couples
- couldn't get safe in room to operate
- came back to hotel at approx 2.30p one afternoon and it was like the place was deserted with no reception staff in sight and lights dimmed.
- terrible shower rose and dirty tiles

There were a few restaurants in the area but still felt rather isolated.

In a nutshell avoid if you can

This is a 3* hotel by Western standard. Under normal circumstances, I would not pay aud90 for this hotel. However, this being a mountain area and of Tibetan origin, one has to be pragmatice and reset ones expectation. There is no air conditioning, as suggested by booking.com. There was no air conditioning for the 3 nights we were there. This was confirmed by the receptionist stating that it's only fan. Perhaps, there's heating in winter. I do not know. In any case, even the fan was not working. I had to get a standing fan delivered to the room. Having said that, the rooms are reasonable, clean and functional. Breakfast was nothing to shout about. I'm of Chinese origin and I could hardy eat any of the stuff presented except for noodle soup, which was made available n my last day,

It's conveniently located, although ou will still want to hop on a taxi to the entrance of Jiuzhaigou Park. 10 rmb is worth the ride as you need all the energy to walk once you get into the park. The staff in this hotel are very helpful and do their best to help. Free wifi was useful. Lots of eating place nearby. Would I stay here again? Considering that Sheraton, which is 2 hotels away, cost 2.5 times more, it's acceptable.

It's a standard 3 star Chinese hotel located quite a distance to the park entrance.
However, you can easily get a 10RMB ride from any of the cars whizzing by on the road.
There is also a nice river trail road behind the hotel to the park.

The hotel restaurant wasnt that great when we had dinner.
Prices were ok but food just was so-so.
They also provide a rather extensive chinese breakfast.
Quite surprising to see such a selection.

Had problems with the booking when the hotel insisted that I had not yet paid even though I had. Took a long time to sort it all out. Booked it through elong.net
They also didnt accept a western credit card and so we almost ran out of cash.

Wouldnt stay here again.
If I go to jiuzhaigou, i would pick a hotel much closer to the park entrance or stay somewhere else like the Intercontinental.

Although I had read the reviews on Xing Yu International Grand Hotel ("Xing Yu) prior to booking this hotel, I was still pretty cynical about the quality of this hotel given how Chinese hotels really are. It also didnt help that there was mention that Xing Yu was located a short distance away from the main entrance of Jiuzhaigou scenic area ("Jiuzhaigou").

The bus trip from Chengdu (Xinnanmen bus station) to Jiuzhaigou bus station took us about 9-10hours and cost about RMB141 each. Upon reaching the bus station, you will be wise to get a cab to take you to the hotel. It will be about a 15-20min walk. The cabs in Jiuzhaigou, which we found out a while later, all ran by meters. Do beware of touts who like to quote you RMB 10 when it should cost only RMB 6 for the ride between the bus station and Xingyu.

We were greeted by a friendly bellboy and helpful staff at the reception. They were very patient with our questions about horse-riding, Mounigou Valley, Huanglong and Songpan even though we found ourselves repeating questions.

There are chiefly 2 bellboys at Xingyu. Both of them were very very helpful. They called for a cab for us on the morning we went to Jiuzhaigou. What Xingyu has done is to link-up with two cab drivers who will service the hotel guests. This way guests would not be ripped off by rogue drivers who refuse to go by the meter.

Later on when we decided to scrap our visit to Songpan and head back to Chengdu earlier, one of the bellboys who lives in Chengdu, suggested to us what we could do there, in great detail. Both the bellboys and reception staff helped us to book rooms at a budget hotel under the Xing Yu chain (RMB 120/room/night). Overall my friends and I were extremely impressed with the service provided by the hotel staff. Extra credit goes to the bellboys.

At RMB 300/room/night, my friend told me the rooms had better be good. And they were. The reception had told us that the air-conditioning system would be down throughout our stay. It did not really matter since the weather was not very cold. We experienced lows of about 5-10deg Celsius. Although they said hot water ran 24hours, I think they stop hot water supply between 10am and the afternoon when most guests would be out visiting.

The layout and decor of the rooms were tasteful. Sleep came to us easily. With the additional blanket(s) we asked for and were quickly provided with, the lack of heating at night was not an issue at all. In fact under the three blankets, I kinda sweated a little at night.

We did not really check out the breakfast at the hotel restaurant since we woke up quite late each day. Instead we decided to just survive on some biscuits and cup noodles, in exchange for extra sleep.

If you do not want to eat at the hotel restaurant, the heart of Zhangzha town is just a 5-7min walk away from the hotel. There are several restaurants, of which one of them served Chongqing Mala Hotpot. Since we were there in the semi-peak period, we had the small restaurant to ourselves on both nights. We had a lot of food and ran up a bill of about RMB 220 each time. To get to this restaurant, you must make a left turn off the main road and then a right turn onto a secondary road that runs parallel to the main road. It is the first restaurant on your left.

There are a lot of mini grocery stores and supermarkets located around. The prices are about 10-20% more expensive than that in Chengdu's Carrefour hypermarts but that is to be expected considering how hard it is transporting goods into the mountainous region.

Obviously you can choose to pay about RMB 800/night at Sheraton or RMB 1000+ at Intercontinental (which is located quite a distance away from Jiuzhaigou). But given what Xing Yu has provided in terms of service and comfort, at only a fraction of Sheraton's charges, you could do a lot worse than to go to Xing Yu.

We were definitely wow-ed.
