My girlfriend and I stayed here this past weekend for just one night.
We were in Birmingham to catch a concert at The Workplay Theater, a nice venue that is less than 5 blocks away from the hotel.
We weren't at the hotel for very long, but it was a pleasant stay. Parking is easily accessible with an attached garage once you arrive.
Its a public garage though, so space might be limited if there's any local event going on. Parking is $5/night, but if you are a Hilton Rewards member (free to sign up), parking is free. We had in/out privilages, but I am not sure if that's due to the Rewards membership or not.
Check-in was fine. Our process went smoothly, but I did notice two couples come down to the desk, saying the rooms they were given already had people in them. The issue was taken care of quickly though. The front desk employees were welcoming and nice, and as typical with a Doubletree, the free (not-so-warm) cookies were welcomed after a long drive as well.
The room was nice and spacious. Seems like the hotel was recently renovated after being bought from Radisson. Carpets were clean, walls
were immaculate, and the flat screen TV (not a flat panel) looked relatively new.
The classic bathroom (sink is inside the actual room) was spacious and clean (save for a hair or two in the tub), and the massaging showerhead was nice. Neutrogena products were a welcomed change from the typical "this soap smells like flowers and pepper" offerings. However the vanity is dimly lit, and there wasn't a fan in our bathroom either (a vent was present, but no switch for a fan). Free coffee in the room was nice (my girlfriend particularly liked how travel cups w/ covers were provided), as was the ample closet space. However, the iron in our room leaked and didn't work properly. I notified the desk upon check-out. I didn't need to iron that badly, so I skipped taking the offered replacement.
The bed was the highlight, as it was an extremely comfortable sleep. Lots of pillows and a pillow-top, semi-firm mattress was perfect for both me and my girlfriend.
Check-out was as easy as pie, simply needing a call down to the desk.
We left at 7:30am, yet our bill/receipt was awaiting us under the door when we woke up.
Niether of us used the pool, but we had a view of it from our room. The sitting area seemed nice and relaxing, but the pool seemed a bit on the small side. Might be a hastle during the warmer months.
The location is convenient, as the hotel, in essence, sits on the campus of UA-B. The downtown area is still a good drive away, but it seems manageable. There is also a Starbucks directly across the street, and some nice eateries less than a mile away.
In all, the hotel was a positive, enjoyable experience. However, nothing was out of the ordinary here. That's a positive thing, but on the same token, it leaves the hotel to be forgetable to habitual travelers.
