The Doubletree is very close to the University of Alabama medical school, and a short drive from lovely Vulcan Park which overlooks the city. Our room was very clean and pleasant, though not large. (The overstuffed chair next to the bed was really in the way.)
There are some good restaurants within walking distance; it's smart to get reservations. The front desk has maps and phone numbers.
Internet worked well, and a newspaper was left at the door. Breakfast was a good buffet, but the servers spent a lot of time loudly talking among themselves, even shouting across the room now and then. The socializing of the staff was so noisy as to be a disturbance in the restaurant.
Stayed at this hotel on a visit to UAB. The hotel is within walking distance to the medical facilities.
On arrival, we were given warm, chocolate chip cookies. The front desk staff were very friendly and speedy. The bell man was a bit chatty but very nice in helping us get our bags upstairs. Parking was really simple and with quick access to rooms.
We had a room on the third floor, and while a little on the small side, were very comfortable. The bed was one of the nicest I have slept on in a hotel in recent memory. There was still a coffee stained pad of paper and the previous guest's hotel card on the night stand that housekeeping must have missed.
They have an incredible busniness center with two computers, color printer and any office supply you might need.
I was very pleased with my stay and would stay there again if I was in the UAB area.
Enjoyed a pleasant stay at this hotel. The hotel staff were extremely friendly. The room and bathroom were clean. I would stay at this property again for future trips.
For 10 years I stayed at the Radisson (now the Doubletree) every three months. Service and rooms got progressively worse but it was within walking distance to UAB. So - I was pleasantly surprised the first time I got to the hotel and realized it had changed to Doubletree. and had been renovated. Room rates are considerably higher but I only need to go once a year now so I can justify it. It was worth it to sleep in one of the most confortable beds I've slept in. Decor including bathroom was very nice. Although I'd recommend staying in a room on the 'pool' side if you want any kind of view at all (unless you enjoy looking at the roof of the building on the other side). And, of course, if you want a perfectly quiet evening it might not be the place since you frequently hear ambulances (but that's to be expected near a hospital, right?).
There have been a few glitches, but fairly minor. This trip, the used coffee filter was still in place from previous guest. There is a noticable noise each time the A/C clicks on. And I must protest the $8 parking fee. Under Radisson, guests staying there parked free of charge. A year ago, under Doubletree fees were $5. Many workers in the area use the parking garage and pay a fee. and it is always full by 9:00 in the morning. However, I think that guests, particularly when you're paying waaaay over $100 a night, should have free parking. Staff was very polite - which is a BIG improvement most of the time under Radisson. And I was astonished that they had two bottles of water (approx 12-16 oz) in the room that they would charge you $3.50 each for.
