“Convenient to UAB”

Doubletree Hotel Birmingham

Jan 29, 2008

For 10 years I stayed at the Radisson (now the Doubletree) every three months. Service and rooms got progressively worse but it was within walking distance to UAB. So - I was pleasantly surprised the first time I got to the hotel and realized it had changed to Doubletree. and had been renovated. Room rates are considerably higher but I only need to go once a year now so I can justify it. It was worth it to sleep in one of the most confortable beds I've slept in. Decor including bathroom was very nice. Although I'd recommend staying in a room on the 'pool' side if you want any kind of view at all (unless you enjoy looking at the roof of the building on the other side). And, of course, if you want a perfectly quiet evening it might not be the place since you frequently hear ambulances (but that's to be expected near a hospital, right?).

There have been a few glitches, but fairly minor. This trip, the used coffee filter was still in place from previous guest. There is a noticable noise each time the A/C clicks on. And I must protest the $8 parking fee. Under Radisson, guests staying there parked free of charge. A year ago, under Doubletree fees were $5. Many workers in the area use the parking garage and pay a fee. and it is always full by 9:00 in the morning. However, I think that guests, particularly when you're paying waaaay over $100 a night, should have free parking. Staff was very polite - which is a BIG improvement most of the time under Radisson. And I was astonished that they had two bottles of water (approx 12-16 oz) in the room that they would charge you $3.50 each for.

Have stayed a number of times in the last few months.
Good location, close to dining(Five points) you can walk to.
Service has been pretty good, as a Diamond member get extra cookies and free breakfast which is a big plus.(Doubltree cookies are by far the best compared to other hotels)
Noisy AC, do not accept a room with an adjoining door, noise goes right through.

Older hotel that needs some additional renovations, oddly enough they have the fastest elevators that I have been on in a hotel.

I practically live in hilton brand hotels ( over 100 nights/yr). This doubletree left me feeling incomplete. It started off bad when te only entrance to the hotel was blocked by a parked car. It was blocking the circular drive-Parked in the middle. There was hotel security standing right there the entire time. After waiting 15 min to get in I checked in & went to my room. Not up to doubletree standards. The bathrooms are in need of a MAJOR update. Not worth the $

“OK hotel, great staff”

Doubletree Hotel Birmingham

Aug 4, 2007

Three days in Birmingham on business. I think this hotel used to be a Radison and has been recently renovated and is now the Doubletree. The primary problem with this property is that building is old and somewhat outdated. The rooms are small to medium, there are no fans in the bathroom, and the AC units are in the exterior wall and cycle on and off all the time.

I am concerned that the "newness" will wear off and the structural limitations will become more of an issue. Hilton was also recently acquired by a private equity firm and the push for increased short term profits by these entities often results in demoralized employees and alienated customers.

Hilton has tried hard to upgrade the property with nice beds, new carpet, bathroom fixtures, upgraded televisions, etc. The location is very convenient to the hospital and the university. The five points area is within walking distance and has a nice selection of restaurants. There is a Starbucks across the street.

The staff, even down the the cleaning personnel, were efficient and pleasant to deal with. I would advise avoiding the lounge, a bourbon on the rocks cost me $11 including tip.

I don't like having to pay for internet use but it was free in the lobby and there is also a business center with two connected desktops and a printer. Parking was free. Hopefully I won't have to go back to Birmingham any time soon but if I do, I would seriously consider staying at the Doubletree again.

“Nice room and great service, but skip the bistro!”

Doubletree Hotel Birmingham

Jul 1, 2007

The staff was very friendly and welcoming at check-in. They provided a succint overview of hotel services, gave us warm cookies, and showed us to our room. Within 15 minutes of checkin, we got a courtesy call from the hotel staff to ask how our room was.

The room was clean and nice. The bed was the most comfortable I've slept in except for at the Four Seasons in Maui. And the two provided bathrobes were much softer and nicer than the one provided at a 4-diamond hotel we'd recently stayed with in San Antonio.

The lobby-level lounge was convenient for a quick drink before going out and had a friendly bartender, but it wasn't a hotspot.

The only real negative was the hotel bistro on the lowest level. The staff loudly co-mingled and socialized while tables went unbussed. The food was fair and not too overpriced, but definitely not memorable. The staff at the front desk was well trained; why not the restaurant staff?
