“Excellent hotel in an up and coming area.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2012

My first experience in Birmingham and I couldn't have picked a better location to stay. The area has great restaurants and nightlife. The room was clean and staff was excellent. I would recommend this hotel to anyone that is going to Birmingham.

Staff was very helpful and accomodating. Room was clean and modern with soft lighting. Recently renovated and improved rooms with modern amenities. Great location surrounded by great restaurants in the 5 Points area. Will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Higher floors give you a nice view of the city.

I booked a night here for our 33rd anniversary. We only live 25 miles outside of town but wanted to be near the best restaurants and entertainment. I placed a comment on the online reservation webpage indicating we were booked there to celebrate our anniversary.

When we arrived, the front desk staff welcomed us and congratulated us on our 33 years without our mentioning it. The check in was friendly and efficient. We were assigned room 603. Room 603 is a gorgeous suite with a view of Five Points South, Red Mountain and the statue of Vulcan. We found a personalized note congratulating us and thanking us for electing to spend it there. We also found a bottle of sparkling white wine and two wine glasses. What a great first impression!

The hotel is a boutique property and is affiliated with the Ascend Collection, the higher end of the Choice Hotels brand. We have stayed in an Ascend property in St. Augustine FL and enjoyed it very much also. The property is clean, well staffed, friendly and unique. Boutique hotels like this break the mold of the cookie cutter chain look and feel which I experience 4 nights of every week ... and I wouldn't have it any other way. Decor is quirky, eclectic, modern, etc. It's a fun place! If you're looking for subdued pastels and earth tones, pick somewhere else.

We experienced a great bed, pillows, bathroom amenities, complimentary water bottles, snacks and had two flat screen TVs in the suite. The hotel is quiet. HVAC was nice and cool on a 100 degree day. Everything was great.

Jenny, the breakfast room attendant was exceptional! Even as people arrived after the 10:00am closing, she pleasantly offered to make waffles or prepare additional items that might be needed. The assortment of scrambled eggs, sausage, grits, waffles, cereals, toast, bagels, yogurt, fruit and juices was excellent. Jenny was efficient and friendly and interacted with guests very smoothly.

Check out was a breeze. No hidden charges and no delay in closing out.

I highly recommend this property! We will use this again for special occasions or when we want to enjoy the Five Points area and not have to worry about driving after a Martini or two.

Hint #1: Ditch the valet parking and park in the parking garage on Magnolia. Take the elevator down and you're 30 feet away from the hotel entrance at Pickwick Place. $14 per day versus $4.

Hint #2: There are some panhandlers around the fountain at Five Points south. We did not see any of these at or near the hotel but walking after dark from the restaurant to the fountain we were approached multiple times. The City of Birmingham needs to address this. Not a hotel issue.

Hint #3: We stayed here on a Tuesday night and not much was going on locally. If you looking for crowds and more excitement, Fridays or Saturdays would probably be more to your liking. We liked the quiet and privacy and the location.

Can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Best views are higher up facing south.

I just spent three nights in the Hotel Highland. I knew of the area and hotel because I am from Birmingham. I chose the location because of its close proximity to some of the best restaurants in the south (and probably world) such as Highlands Bar and Grill, Bottega, Veranda, Hot and Hot Fish Club, etc.

Despite the fact that the 5 Points area is ripe for some re-investment dollars, the hotel is well-situated perfectly between Vulcan, trendy Mountain Brook Village and Homewood; and UAB/downtown.

For the money, the Hotel Highland cannot be beat. I gave it five stars for value, hospitality, and location. The rooms are clean and a bit funky. The staff are friendly and will go out of the way to answer questions and help. Here are a few of the high points and things for visitors to note....

* There is an older parking deck behind the hotel where you can park your own car for anywhere between 2 and 4 bucks a day, thereby avoiding valet rates. The deck has an elevator that opens right behind the hotel's back entrance. You will pay each time you leave and return.

* The hotel is less than two blocks walk from Highland's Bar and Grill, which has been nominated as one of James Beard's top restaurants in the U.S. for the past several years. Call for reservations or try to squeeze in at the bar. You are also is walking distance to other great restaurants in a variety of price ranges.

* The hotel offers a full breakfast. My breakfast featured eggs, sausage, grits, pastries, juice, make-your-own waffles, cereal, fruit, and yogurt.

* A variety of people in Birmingham from all backgrounds and walks of life will use the Five Points Fountain (between the hotel and Highlands Bar and Grill) as a meeting point day or night. Sometimes this includes homeless people. They usually do not bother anyone, but you may want to be aware.

* This is a great base for a foodie tour of Birmingham (within one-two miles of all of Birmingham's downtown and Southside's award winning restaurants), or those in town for UAB or other business.

I am so glad that we were a "Surprise" for you and that your experience at The Hotel Highland was a fabulous one! The area is wonderful for all the "foodies" as you can walk to some of the very BEST restaurants~ We are happy to announce that the area is getting many re-investment dollars with the World of Beers, Waffle House and an undisclosed business, all opening within the year! We are so very excited! We cannot wait for your return to see all the new things happening in the area!! Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us about your stay! Have a wonderful day, as we look forward to your next visit~ :)

This hotel had a cool vibe going on. It's in a hip neighborhood with lots of good food, fun bars, and historic sights....the area may have been a tad seedy, but that only adds to the character in my opinion. The beds were very comfortable, and most importantly the room was clean and fresh. They had nice organic soaps and lotions, mostly paraben free, which scores major points with me. My only complaint was that the gym did not have an elliptical machine as running on the treadmill tends to upset my knees. Breakfast was delicious and they even had soy yogurt for the non-dairy eaters!

Room Tip: We got a (standard) king bed room, which was very nice, but since we're used to a california kin...

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review about our hotel! As a side note, we are working hard with the Mayor's Office to correct some of the issues that have come into the Five Points Area....we hope to have them resolved very soon, as the area is a great place to eat fabulous food and have some fabulous fun!! Thank you again and have a wonderful day~ :)

I stayed here during my orientation at UAB and I really enjoyed it. A little overpriced, but you get the service you pay for. We originally booked a normal king room, but was upgraded to a suite. The staff was very friendly, happy, and sociable. You'll notice as you walk in that the hotel has a very eclectic feel. The furniture and decorations are unique. The breakfast in the morning was wonderful. The bed was comfortable. We were on the seventh floor, and the view of the city was great. Our room also had a Keurig! I was very pleased about that. The hotel is within walking distance to so many great bars and restaurants, which was nice. The only thing we didn't like was the noise heard once in a while in the hallway. We couldn't hear anyone from the other rooms - just loud talkers and yellers through the door, once at night. Clean hotel. I will definitely stay here again, if I get the chance.

This historic hotel in Five Points South is certainly unique. It is an old building, so expect some quirks: the shower pipes made a loud noise when used, there are special instructions about the air/heat, etc... However, the furniture and decor of the place is very "artsy" and fun. My bed was very comfortable, as was the temperature of my room. I had a room that overlooked downtown---nice view! And not noisy at all. The breakfast included scrambled eggs, sausage, and grits, as well as the usual hotel fare (waffle maker, pastries, coffee, juice). Parking can be an issue---they have valet and there is a nearby parking deck. Since it was the weekend, I just parked on the street as close as I could to the hotel. There are some great restaurants and bars in this area, most within walking distance, but be aware that there are also a lot of homeless people/street people, although none tried to solicit me. Still, I would recommend being aware of your surroundings. In summary, this hotel is perfect for those who like to be "in the middle of the action" and who are into funky, eclectic furnishings.

Room Tip: I would ask for either a view of the Vulcan or a view of downtown.
