My wife and I stayed at the Tuwiler hotel for my birthday in December and we ate at the Icon Restaurant inside the hotel.
We arrived early and was promptly seated inside this newly renovate restaurant. Our server promptly appeared at our table to introduce herself and offer us a wine list.
We ordered the Filet and pan seared Halibut and both were outstanding! Our server was good at her job and I would go back to this restaurant anytime I'm looking for a quiet and romantic meal.
Upfront: I have not yet stayed at the revamped Tutwiler. However, I did tour a suite and it is impressive. I am not easily pleased but the suite was nicely done with more space than many suites in which I have stayed AND a nice outdoor terrace. I live in Birmingham but already plan to reserve the suite for special events downtown. I cannot comment on standard room, service, etc.
However, I had an excellent meal at ICON, the hotel restaurant under Geoffrey Slate, one of the top chefs in B'ham. I was a fan of Restaurant G, his previous restaurant. The Look: The restuarant is airy, handsome and understated--exactly what I like. There are a few private dining areas with gauzy curtains of gold.
The Food: My dish-Thai rice noodles and shrimp-served noodles with perfectly (not over) done shrimp in a Thai sauce with just enough zest. Waiter nicely comped my after-I-had-paid-the-check espresso. A nice touch typical of the best restaurants and servers.
