Owner description: Four young girls were killed when a Ku Klux Klan bomb exploded in this church in 1963. The girls are remembered with a shrine in the crypt where they died, and a vibrant stained glass window donated in sympathy by the people of Wales adorns the historic church.

“Do Not Miss This”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2013

There is no excuse for coming to Birmingham without seeing this iconic symbol of the civil rights movement. The sanctuary is impressive enough, and there's a small memorial / museum in the basement. Do not miss the understated monument outside the window where the bomb was placed.

“History and Healing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

Located next to civil rights museum, this church not only commemorates the 1963 tragedy that outraged the nation to action, it provides a tranquil testament to forgiveness and reconciliation. Built in 1909, its beautiful sanctuary lit by vintage and contemporary stained glass; outside are monuments and plaques reflecting its history. A national landmark, the 16th Street Baptist Church offers inspiration for the kind of society we should strive to be.

“Civil Rights History”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

You can't help but get the feeling of September 15th 1963 when you visit this historic and hallowed place. You also will not miss the feeling that God is in the place. One of the most historic places in America -- don't miss it.

“Moving, but with barriers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

If you take the tour of the church, you will be shown inside to the sanctuary of the church, where they will play a video. The video, though dated, is powerful and highlights the events of the 1963 bombing.
Unfortunately, there is still a significant cultural barrier here. I got the impression from the tour-guide that he perceived us to be trespassing--it was not a welcoming atmosphere.
The tour is also incredibly short, and I wish that there was more to it. However, the church is primarily used as a church with the tours being an auxiliary function, making it reasonable for the tours to be simple.

“You just have to go.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

It is an important building in American history albeit for a sad reason. The Civil Rights walking tours and the Civil Rights Institute are just across the street. It is all there in one area. Worth going.
