There wasn't much to see in Chengde, but I think this is one of the most beautiful sites in the city.
Even though the architecture might be considered just a copy of Tibetan buildings and the temples are not as preserved as they should, the view that the combination of the temples give you are terrific.
You can tell there's history behind those walls and paintings, and it's not a simple copy.
I definitely recommend the visit.

Even though they are not very well maintained and they charge a lot for entrance fees, they are great places to visit and to understand the history during the Qing period. The temples are all for different groups and different religions. But all are very built and in great locations.

There are many temples surrounding the summer palace. We only visited two of them (Puning and Putuo Zongcheng) for lack of time. They are all only a few minutes drive from each other. The areas are very beautiful although a bit overpriced. I suggest doing the temples in the morning and leaving the whole afternoon for the palace.

Just 3hours away from Beijing where temperatures were very high, this place was paradise. The temples are beautiful and peaceful, away from the crowds of Chinese tourists that filled the Mountain resort. Climbing was easy because you stop in all the gates and enjoy the beautiful interiors or the golden rooftop. I Felt on top of the world and the view is spectacular. No western tourists on the day I visited it so it is still very genuine

The origin of these temples is more interesting than the actual buildings which are nicer to be seen from far than actually visited in detail. Emperor Qianlong (major Qing dynasty, the last one) wanted to treat his western colleagues from Tibet (an old chines preoccupation) and had built these copies of major buddhist temples to honour his dominated "guests". However the buildings require urgent care and restoration. The inside visit are exhausting (many stairs), relatively expensive and beside of the landscape of limited interest. We regreted to have not devoted more time to the park of the summer palace instead.
