We weren't expecting much here in the small(ish) city of Kaili, but new mill inn turned out to be fantastic.

The receptionist couldn't speak any English but we made do with google translate on the computer and got a twin room for 100RMB per night. It was a lovely clean room with all the amenities. They also came in to clean each day.

The location was perfect - close to bus routes and the long distance bus station. Close to lots of cheap local food and the market.

Great wifi connection and the staff were always smiley and helpful. The owner speaks English very well.

I would definitely recommend this place if you're in Kaili.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

We stayed here three nights from the 24th to the 27th of june 2013. We first chose a cheap 4-person room with bunk beds, but it was on the ground floor which seemed like a noisy place to be, so we upgraded to two private 2-bed rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The value was quite good, but our bathroom was a bit smelly and we had a faulty a/c remote.

The staff we met spoke no English whatsoever, but we got by using our phones as translators. We also had a hard time finding the hotel as we arrived after sundown and didn't have the name or address written down in Chinese, and there are no street numbers visible on this street. We luckily stumbled upon it when we were about to give up: it's on the southern side of the Yingpan East Road, not far west of the intersection with Zhoufu Road. It's in a small alley going south, and there's a neon sign at the beginning of this alley.

We quite enjoyed our stay in Kaili, it's very authentic even though it's a fairly big city, we only saw two other westerners in three days.. The old town and the market were awesome, and the silver market off the western side of Shaoshan North Road was quite nice. I believe we paid 6.5 yuan per gram for the silver after some bargaining.

The grandmothers dancing outside in the evening were very cute too, try to catch them at the intersection of Yingpan East Road and Wenhua North Road!

The New Mill Inn is a breath of fresh air in comparison to the fairly dirty Chinese city in which its based, which is nonetheless at te center of many minority villages many will find fascinating. There is Internet in the lobby, which is a basic setup and not where you'd necessarily want to spend a whole day. Sheets etc changed daily and free laundry service in roof! Staff is polite but speaks limited English so bring a phrasebook.

We stayed for 2 nights at a cost of approx £8 per night (no breakfast) so were pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

Its a simple, small hotel down a side alley but close to the shops and restaurants. The staff were very friendly and helpful and were able to speak and understand English (enough to get by).

The room was clean and the bathroom although small had a western toilet and a small corner sink. The beds were comfortable and unlike previous reviewer we had no trouble at night with noise from the street.

Its only a 10 min walk to the bus station, and one of our reasons for staying here was to visit the town of Xijiang. We had no trouble finding the bus going there and would recommend a day there - especially if you're not travelling to Lijiang. Its a traditional town surrounded by paddy fields with plenty of workers and water buffalo in the fields.

Overall our stay at New Mill was excellent value for money and we would certainly recommend it to anyone like us who thinks a hotel is for sleeping in and not for spending a lot of time in.

From roughly 2 am to 7 am, there is relative quiet in the alley containing the New Mill Inn. You have no choice but to catch some sleep during these five hours. The rest of the night it is absolute bedlam: hammering, loud conversation and mahjong parties from the outside and loud conversation and slamming of doors from your fellow guests. It doesn't help that the windows can't close all the way so you're more or less stuck with the outside noise. Other negatives include a bit of a moldy smell in the room and less than perfect cleanliness (the towels seem to emit a chemical smell).

But there are several pluses to staying here. The value is extraordinary -- less than 100 RMB for a comfortable bed and western toilet. The location (a little bit west from the intersection of Yingpan Lu and Zhoufu Lu) is ideal -- just keep walking a block east and turn north on Wenhua Bei Lu to get to the main bus station. And everyone is right about the service, the staff is friendly and really try to help out.

Overall, I would hesitate to recommend this place due to the nighttime noise but if you can sleep through it or have some great earphones, this is the place for you.

We stumbled across this hotel after searching for the budget hotel listed in Lonely Planet that no longer exists and being turned away from several other hotels not licenced to take foreigners.

They were offering some sort of introductory rate when we stayed which was really great value - in fact this ws probably the best value hotel we stayed at during our 4 months in China. The room was clean and big enough, the bed comfortable and the bathroom modern and fully functional. The staff were also very friendly and seemed happy to have us stay (even posing for photos with us when we left).

The location is also convenient - walking distance to two bus stations and the supermarket/city centre.
