“Not bad for the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

We stayed for 2 nights at a cost of approx £8 per night (no breakfast) so were pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

Its a simple, small hotel down a side alley but close to the shops and restaurants. The staff were very friendly and helpful and were able to speak and understand English (enough to get by).

The room was clean and the bathroom although small had a western toilet and a small corner sink. The beds were comfortable and unlike previous reviewer we had no trouble at night with noise from the street.

Its only a 10 min walk to the bus station, and one of our reasons for staying here was to visit the town of Xijiang. We had no trouble finding the bus going there and would recommend a day there - especially if you're not travelling to Lijiang. Its a traditional town surrounded by paddy fields with plenty of workers and water buffalo in the fields.

Overall our stay at New Mill was excellent value for money and we would certainly recommend it to anyone like us who thinks a hotel is for sleeping in and not for spending a lot of time in.

From roughly 2 am to 7 am, there is relative quiet in the alley containing the New Mill Inn. You have no choice but to catch some sleep during these five hours. The rest of the night it is absolute bedlam: hammering, loud conversation and mahjong parties from the outside and loud conversation and slamming of doors from your fellow guests. It doesn't help that the windows can't close all the way so you're more or less stuck with the outside noise. Other negatives include a bit of a moldy smell in the room and less than perfect cleanliness (the towels seem to emit a chemical smell).

But there are several pluses to staying here. The value is extraordinary -- less than 100 RMB for a comfortable bed and western toilet. The location (a little bit west from the intersection of Yingpan Lu and Zhoufu Lu) is ideal -- just keep walking a block east and turn north on Wenhua Bei Lu to get to the main bus station. And everyone is right about the service, the staff is friendly and really try to help out.

Overall, I would hesitate to recommend this place due to the nighttime noise but if you can sleep through it or have some great earphones, this is the place for you.

We stumbled across this hotel after searching for the budget hotel listed in Lonely Planet that no longer exists and being turned away from several other hotels not licenced to take foreigners.

They were offering some sort of introductory rate when we stayed which was really great value - in fact this ws probably the best value hotel we stayed at during our 4 months in China. The room was clean and big enough, the bed comfortable and the bathroom modern and fully functional. The staff were also very friendly and seemed happy to have us stay (even posing for photos with us when we left).

The location is also convenient - walking distance to two bus stations and the supermarket/city centre.

Rooms are good quality (the only beds I've slept on in China that aren't harder than a snooker table), but the main draw was owner Rex, who was unbelievably helpful; not only did he come to meet us in the pouring rain, but he also checked train ticket availability online (which we could not do as the website was in mandarin) and then went to the station to collect our tickets. He was always available to call for accommodation in the nearby small villages and for advice on which buses to catch. Definitely recommended if you are in Kaili
