“Lovely hotel but staff could be more polite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 days ago NEW via mobile

This hotel is one of the loveliest ones I have stayed in, having traveled a lot.

Pros:
- lovely room design,
- beautiful scenery,
- good food. Breakfast is a'la carte but the portions are decent. Very tasty,
- guest info book in English. Never saw that in the rest of China,
- staff speak really good English which is unheard of in China. I will add that English is not my native tongue, but it is universal so one would expect most basic phrases to be at least understood. No such thing in China.

Cons:
- located a 10-minute taxi ride from Yangshuo (a ride costs 40-45 RMB, but a free shuttle is available twice a day),
- no water in room. Apparently you can fill your bottle at the reception but I just bought bottled water,
- the staff are not the most polite kind. They have quite an attitude, getting easily annoyed when you ask them questions, or laughing between themselves and commenting in Chinese the very second you finish talking to them.

Only a one night stay in our grand tour the Mountain retreat was the simplest of the places where we slept.

The scenery is fabulous and we were fortunate to have a nice room with balcony overlooking the Yulong River. The room is a good size, fairly simple with bamboo furniture a ceiling fan and air-conditioner (which worked properly). There is a walk in shower (make sure you aware of when hot water is available), western toilet (make sure the paper is put into the bin provided).

The whole place had a nice country feel and it was very relaxing to watch the continued stream of rafters coming down the river (a big attraction in these parts).

The restaurant serves simple country food - we were out in the evening at the amazing light show so we had to order in advance. We chose the local beer fish - very tasty but too many bones for us and accompanied by a simple chinese wine. Breakfast is a simple affair but adequate.

Staff here are local people and although English is a bit limited they all try to help and you are always greeted with a smile.

It was actually nice to visit somewhere else other than another 5-star hotel.

Room Tip: Try and get a room overlooking the river with a balcony - these are certainly best.

This guest house is a few km out of the main city so you don't come here for the nightlife or shopping! You come for the views, the simplicity and to have a nice relaxing time down by the river.

The staff are very friendly, most have excellent English, and they're very helpful, which is really useful because English isn't widely spoken in this part of the world! Just remember that they're still Chinese so customs are a little different e.g. when they take your order in the restaurant, don't be surprised if they just come to your table with a "Yes? You ready?" They're not being rude, they're still friendly ... it's just a different culture.

The room I had was small, but was clean, well-maintained and comfortable with all the things I needed (especially air-con as I visited at the end of Aug)! Just one word of caution: if you have to get up early, make sure you ask the staff to switch on the hot water! I had to get up at 4am one day and had a cold shower because I didn't realize they don't switch the hot water on until 6am!

This is also a great location to go do lots of outdoor activities like walking through the local towns or ride paddies, bike-riding up or down the river, swimming, or just floating down the river. Everything is right on your doorstep.

The only downside I noticed was that sound travels quite easily through the doors so noisy neighbors can be quite disruptive.

It's not a fancy resort - it's more of a down-to-earth guesthouse but for the price you pay, it's incredible value that's hard to beat. I'd definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: Try to get a room that overlooks the river. They'll be away from the road (which can be quite bu...

Last time I went to Yangshuo was back in the mid-80s when Yangshuo was just a village on the Li river. I was amazed and not a little disappointed to see who it has changed into a big town, so I was thankful that we were staying up the the Mountain Retreat. We were very unfortunate as it had been raining hard before our stay so the river was too swollen for any boat or raft trips and you definitely wouldn't want to swim in it.

Still it was a lovely hotel - we had a nice, comfortable family room on the ground floor. The water coming out of the taps was a slightly alarming shade of brown; I'm guessing this was from all the run-off from the past few days. The river was the same colour. We were only there two nights - we arrived late the first night and left after breakfast after the second night, but we ate in the restaurant and the food was delicious. The hotel is in such a beautiful spot, right on the river. I really wish the weather had been better but at least it didn't rain the day we were there. In good weather I imagine it's a magical place.

My sister and I truly enjoyed the surroundings and food at this place! Highly recommended! You can go hiking, rafting, swimming or just chill with a good book and look at the river. I felt much calmer after my stay there.

I would just like to agree with other reviews that this place is lovely. The staff are so friendly and helpful, the rooms clean and with lovely views. It was so peaceful after visiting cities in China. I would definitely recommend.
