After travelling from Northern Virginia, and spending a week in Taiwan and Hong Kong, spending four days at Phoenix Pagoda was a much needed break to decompress. The retreat is nestled in a small village of Fonglou, and is surrounded by karst peaks. The retreat provided my husband, my 15 year old son and me with a private shuttle to and fro from Liagjian airport, Guilin. I would recommend this service to first time travelers to Guilin because the retreat is about 45 miles from the airport and it saves you the hassle of dealing with the language barrier and finding transportation after a tiring flight. The personnel service provided by Luna, Lilly and Fannie will be forever remembered by my family, especially by my son, who learnt Chinese words and phrases from Fannie and Lilly. Our bedroom had its own private balcony surrounded by mountains, and our beds were considerably softer than the harder beds in most hotels in China. The Chinese believe that hard beds are good for your health; however, this posed considerable hardship for me as I’m accustomed to softer beds. Thus, sleeping on the beds at Phoenix Pagoda was a welcome relief. The food was excellent and the overall service was impeccable. The hotel planned and arranged daily tours for my family including boat trips on the Li and Yulong River, mountain climbing; cave exploration and bike riding trips. Overall it was a great experience and I highly recommend the Phoenix Pagoda for a tranquil and restful stay.
