“Clean, very nice & quaint”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2012

I am very particular about staying in clean, uncluttered, and tranquil hotels, and due to past experiences, I have always avoided bed & breakfast inns. Thus, I arrived in Fonglou village with a healthy dose of skepticism about the Phoenix Pagoda Inn, where our company had reserved several rooms for a company retreat. However, the Phoenix Pagoda Inn is a different kind of bed & breakfast, hence my experience is worth sharing.

I was very pleasantly surprised last November when I arrived at this small, clean, quiet, and quaint inn, with all the modern amenities one would expect from a hotel, balanced by traditional Chinese décor.

We spent 4 days at the Phoenix Pagoda; our time comprised of 4 hours of daily corporate team-building exercises, followed by rest and relaxation that included bicycle and moped riding, bamboo water rafting along the Li River, rock climbing, zip lining, and repelling on Karst peaks in and around the village. We also enjoyed a large-scale, colorful performance by the Li River Mountain-Water Theater, which displayed the cultures of ethnic groups in Guangxi in the open-air Li River Amphitheater in Yangzhou City.

The staff of the Phoenix Pagoda Inn is extremely friendly and caring, with a strong command of the English language. The guest beds were comfortable, not the hard type favored in China which I dread, and the guest rooms offered beautiful views of the Karst peaks. Breakfast each morning, perched high atop the inn on the open-air deck watching the villagers begin their day while the cows mooed, the birds tweeted and the dogs roamed, was a sight to behold and offered time for reflection.

The 4 days at the Phoenix Pagoda made me feel more relaxed than I have felt in 30 years anywhere else. If you visit China, you must not miss the opportunity to stay at the Phoenix Pagoda Inn in Fonglou village.

Our family of 5 adults decided to stay at this hotel after checking out the various reviews on TA and were we glad! The location is amazing, as you are surround by picturesque karst. The feeling is awesome as you admire the beautiful surrounding while laying on the cosy and comfotable bed ( our rooms was on the 3rd floor). One highlight of our stay was the dinner we had in the hotel. While speaking to one of the helpful staff about the various dining options, she suggested we try the hotel's restaurant. The chef came and spoke with us about the different types of local dishes he could prepare for us. (We love to try different local cuisine when we travel). We had a very lovely dinner.... the vegetables were grown organically on the plot land besides the hotel, the chicken was obtained from the nearby village and the fish from the Youlong river. We love the home cooked, fresh taste. Not too oily, not too salty and no MSG. We ended dinner with banana & apple pancake. What a treat!
The staff were very friendly, gentle and out to ensure that we had a pleasant stay. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a peaceful, clean & friendly place to stay... surrounded by picturesque karsts.

The scenery is spectacular, especially from the breakfast deck. The breakfast was very good, too, especially the fresh-squeezed orange juice.
The staff is wonderful, and were very helpful getting us to the local tourist attractions. Take that rafting trip down the river - you won't regret a minute.
The rooms are clean and very comfortable. The rustic look of the furniture adds to its charm.
I hope to get back with my family in the near future.

Under one of our friends intrduction. we traveled to Yangshuo in middle April and styed the "Hotel", Phoenix Fonglou. When we got into the hotel, we felt clean, elegent and refind in the mini lobby. The room also designed elaborately. For example, comfort and softness bed is just like at home, the washbasin designe is also full of old-fasioned, much different from general designe and the floor, includeing bathroom, is all made by stone. Opening the room backdoor, you will find a big pulick backyard which may make your leisure, drinking tes, chat and sport. Since there are not many rooms there, you strongly felt the sevise personnel's friendly and polite. In additional, the breakfast is also a characteristic. There are western style and Chinese (local food) style breakfast. Each breakfast you ordered will be cooked by the chef right away. Breakfast of fruit juice is also locally product fruit, freshlysqueezed juice. We stay there four days and fully enjoyed the vocation.

We spent four days at the Phoenix Pagoda. It was the highlight of our trip to China. The hotel is just far enough out of Yangshuo to be free of the tourist scene. The panoramic view from the rooftop restaurant is extraordinarily beautiful. We enjoyed sitting on our veranda watching the village life of Fonglou go by. Bicycling through the fields and orchards was a fascinating treat. The accommodations were unique and comfortable. Members of the hotel staff were delightful.

A friend and I travelling together to Yangshuo took a chance on this hotel based on the Tripadvisor reviews after finding several other places we'd been recommended were fully booked. It lived up to the good reviews - this is a charming little hotel in a lovely, peaceful location away from the hustle and neon of Yangshuo town, moments away from the stunning Yulong river. You can be in town in no time for a 30 RMB cab ride but it's definitely nice to come home to such a tranquil place, and there is beautiful scenery to bike or hike through right outside the door, with Moon Hill only a few minutes walk away. The rooms are fairly basic but clean and nicely decorated with the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in! The hotel has plenty of road and mountain bikes you can hire and they can arrange trips and activities such as the Impressions San Liu Jie show, bamboo rafting or a cooking class very easily. Sadly as it rained a lot of the time during our stay we didn't get to eat many meals on the roof terrace which has brilliant views. The food isn't amazing but perfectly okay and they do nice, good value and filling breakfasts, plus delicious ginger tea! Try to get a room on the second floor with a balcony view - our first night we stayed in the ground floor twin room which was a bit dark and very humid, but then we moved to a second floor room with a mountain view balcony which was much nicer. The best part about this hotel though is the staff who are thoroughly delightful. Nothing is too much trouble, they are incredibly cheery, helpful and friendly, and speak fantastic English. I live in China and have rarely experienced such good customer service here, even in 5 star hotels.
