“Disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

After reading some of the reviews here I had high expectations regarding Yangshuo Village Inn. One of the things most important to me in B&Bs is a good host, capable of providing good tips and helping you taking the most of your short stay. Well, during my stay it happened quite the opposite. Although I started emailing our host a couple of weeks before my arrival in order to provide some local tours tips, the truth is that they seemed more interested in just providing information for the tours they get a commission. I could have visited the rice terraces for half the money I actually spent, because I had to book it in the last minute.
The taxi from the airport was also a mess. Although they advertise a pick-up service, it's just a regular taxi that anyone can take on the airport. That would not be a problem if we hadn't to pay directly to the taxi driver, although the cost was already included in my stay (in the end, I got my money back, but it was very difficult to explain).
There are many other places to stay and better located than this Inn. And by the way, the farmhouse is not that good.

UndertheMoon, Manager at Yangshuo Village Inn, responded to this review, April 30, 2013
At the Village Inn, we always encourage guests to visit our beautiful website, which has dozens of detailed suggestions for activities in Yangshuo, many of them free. We offer a free shuttle into town and to the Mountain Retreat, free bicycles, and we suggest guests try a hike or bike tour without guides, using our own hand-drawn map of local paths and trails (which we sell for .80 cents). Our tour prices are the same as most other hotels in Yangshuo, and to say that we only try to sell tours is untrue.
The airport car is contracted by us and is a licensed taxi driver and if you tried to rent yourself you would pay much more. If you try to organize any tour yourself in Yangshuo, it ends up costing much more, since local partners provide sizable discounts to us. We only contract experienced guides, reliable drivers and top service providers in Yangshuo and for anyone who might think they can get a better deal trying to negotiate with locals, that it always your option.
Sincerely,
Anna and Village Inn Family

We stayed in the farmhouse behind the main guest house which worked very well for us. Actually it would be a great spot to go with another family (ies) such that you could 'take over' the farmhouse as it's got a common area too. It's a little musty during the wet months but other than that we found it to be very comfortable. Luna was great - especially the happy hour. The team at the guest house was very friendly and helpful with planning our daily outings...

Great Italian restaurant and very comfortable beds and excellent mountain bikes. Quite far from yangshuo itself. Friendly and helpful staff. A great time at the hotel despite rainy weather. The rooms were good and the staff hooked us up with a brilliant guide called nancy who took us on great trips

My family had a great short stay at the Village Inn. We stayed 3 nights in the farmhouse which is beautifully decorated, very comfortable and quiet. We did remark that we wondered how cold it might be in winter. We had one night in the main guest house. This was also nice, but I preferred the farmhouse. We go to bed early (with kids) and I was quite worried about the noise from the restaurant upstairs and in particular the dumb waiter that rumbles up the side of the building from the kitchen on the ground floor. Thankfully all of this noise seemed to stop at around 10 pm. The restaurant is great. We tried both the Italian and Chinese dishes and all were of a high standard.

The staff (particularly Anna and Emily) are very nice and were very helpful in organising bike hire, a trip to the 'fan village' and painting lesson with a 'fan master' (a 'fan'tastic family experience :)) and tickets for the light show (also fantastic).

Just one little peeve - This place is not cheap by Chinese standards. I think when you are charging what you are for both accomodation and meals, you could try not to 'nickel and dime' people. I refer to: 1. Having to pay for coffee refills with breakfast (mediocre brewed coffee, that is) 2. Having to pay 10 yuan for a brochure-type map of the local area. 3. Charging 3% on top of payment when using a credit card to fix your bill (which my husband actually claims is illegal, but I can't verify that).

Room Tip: The farmhouse

The Village Inn is right off of the main tourist street near Moon Hill, a quick cab from Yangshuo itself. We loved the rustic inn and enjoyed all of our meals at the rooftop restaurant, "Luna". The staff was helpful and friendly. The wifi was quick and reliable. We were there in the spring, and the temperatures were fine. It's not a chain hotel, so if you are expecting a Holiday Inn, you are in the wrong location.

This place will suit you if you prefer interesting architecture and style over 5 star facilities. Aside from the great building, the staff are the other key attraction - really knowledgeable and helpful. I recommend hiring a bike and exploring around the place - easily arranged from the front desk.

We had a slight issue with our 3 year old boy getting a stomach upset - which may or may not have been related to food at the restaurant. This is most likely one of those things you have to expect when travelling in China - and after some vomiting that night he was better the next day. Given how much we liked the place and the staff I considered not mentioning this - but thought in case there was a pattern it is better than people hear about it.

Room Tip: I'd recommend the upstairs rooms in the old house at the back. We had one upstairs room and one...

The staff was fantastic. Tina, especially, helped us plan (and optimize) every day. The room was clean, comfortable and perfect to come home to after a long day. The rooftop bar (breakfast and evening happy hour) was amazing with a stunning view of Moon Hill. We arrived very late (2am) and three staff members were there to greet us! If you're going to Yangshuo (and you should!) - stay here rather than in the town - the staff will get a cab for you at any time and it's only 5-10 minutes to town. I highly recommend a cycling tour with a guide - beautiful ride through the countryside and hills, followed by a tranquil river raft ride.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of Moon Hill.
