“Big, but really nice service ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2014

This is not a boutique hotel. It's massive. And it has related problems : sometimes the plumbing is bad, often there is work going on.

But the staff were unfailingly helpful, the view from the roof remains fine despite increased construction in the vicinity, and the rooms are good. The basic ones are good value, the more expensive ones perhaps less so.

The rooftop food is pretty average, and the Chinese restaurant / room service is OK.

+ hotel is quite far out of town, more than walking distance,
- facilities are clean,
+ rooms are quite big,
- bathroom was smallish and basic,
- (western) breakfast is poor,
- staff's english is challenging,
- service was rather slow,
- too much sales of 'local art' within premises

A sandstorm raged for the first few days of our visit to Dunhuang in November 2013 and thiss hotel provided very comfortable shelter. Although most of the hotel tourist services were closed because it was out-of-season, the basic restaurant and car services were still available at reasonable rates.

Our room was very comfortable and attractively designed in the Dunhuang/Silk Road style. Good bed, TV, internet, and the bathroom was excellent - clean and well-serviced.

The staff are incredibly professional - very well trained, helpful and courteous. The female fron-of-house manager is exceptionally professional and also friendly with excellent english.

Free car-service into the town centre, and assistance with ongoing travel tickets (train, bus, plane).

Excellent place to stay.

We have waited for years for someone to build a nice hotel in Dunhuang, before taking a sightseeing trip there. For several years, Banyan Tree had plans to build a hotel there, but finally abandoned the project for some unknown reason.

The Silk Road Dunhuang is a large hotel with hundreds of rooms. We had a "dune view" room. The room was reasonably large and sparsely furnished, and the bed was very hard, which was OK for us but not for everyone. For some reason, the doors to the hotel lobby were open, and it was quite cold in the lobby area.

There was a long walk from our room in the main building to the Chinese restaurant, mostly through outside corridors. For breakfast, we had to walk outside and then upstairs. These walks could be a problem when the weather is cold. Food at breakfast and for dinner at the Chinese restaurant were both not very good. We had quite low expectations for food in Dunhuang, and the food quality at this hotel was even below our low expectations.

Dunhuang is a very nice place to visit, and the Mogao Caves are wonderful. We just wish there are better hotels to serve the area.

Thank you for choosing to stay at The Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel and your comments. Due to desert climate, it is cold from Oct to April in Dunhuang. We have informed the hotel to improve the heating system for all indoor areas and review the food menu at the restaurants. We welcome you to stay with us again during summer time, May - Sep, when you can enjoy the beautiful sunshine and savor different kinds of melons in Dunhuang, and feast your eyes on the amazing starry sky at the Starry Lounge of The Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel.

This is a wonderful hotel -- vast open lobby, lovely guest rooms, well-appointed bathrooms, reminiscent of the great lodges in our national parks. Proximity to the Singing Dunes and Crescent Lake a plus. Food was very good and they provided great yogurt at breakfast with other western foodstuffs. The only minus is that this hotel is not AT ALL handicapped-accessible. There are stairs between wings and no elevator service to the 4th floor restaurant, so if you can'tclimbstairs this may not be the place for you.

If you are interested in having a truly authentic Silk Road experience while enjoying modern luxuries - this is the place. The view at breakfast over the sand dunes in the Starry Lounge is one of the most amazing sites I've ever seen. I wish I was still there! The staff are very kind and hospitable. The rooms are beautifully decorated and we were always very well taken care of. The food is excellent and I heard from colleagues that the massages (especially those under the open starry skies) were fantastic. You can even organise to do a camel ride directly from the hotel!
I was so impressed by the whole experience of Dunhuang - the people, the scenery, the culture and of course the phenomenal Magao Grottos. I would absolutely recommend staying here and visiting this incredible part of China.

The Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel was our "oasis" during a three-day visit to the Mogao Caves and Crescent Lake. The hotel is large, elegantly decorated and the rooms are comfortable and lovely- everything works. The restaurant serves very good food. Service is friendly and always courteous. The roof lounge is a excellent place to watch the sun go down over the surrounding sand dunes. All in all one could not expect a more ideal place to stay in this remote part of Gansu Province.

Room Tip: If arriving after October 1, but when the weather is still quite warm, seek a room avoiding western...
