“Well worth a visit before or after caves”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

The english tours of the caves are 10, 12 , 14 if you arrive at the wrong time do this first but even so it's well worth going after the caves as it has lots of interesting information and exibits. You will need at least an hour.

“Amazing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2011

This was amazing to see and incredibly interesting. The giant Buddhas we truly awe inspiring. There were many large groups of Chinese tours, but because we were an English speaking group there were only about 6 people in our tour group and it felt more intimate. We were also told (not sure if this is true or not) the English groups see different grottoes than the Chinese groups).

“Don't skip this”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2011 via mobile

Once you see the caves you must visit the museum to get a better understanding of how the caves, statue and paintings came to be. They also have several of the caves in reproduction whic you can photograph. There are no cameras allowed on the actual caves.

“Artifacts and opportunities to take photos”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2011

This museum attached to the Mogao Grottoes displays artifacts found in the caves. More importantly there are replica caves (done very nicely) which you can take photos of. This is important as you can't take photos in the grottoes themselves. The museum collection includes Nestorian scriptures and a cross showing that Christians had reached this part of the world before the caves were shut up...the world is small....
