We used Elong to reserve. We stayed 11/1-11/3. I requested a king and that room at the back of the hotel was horrible!! Stay away from those at all cost!!! I asked for something up front and those are so much better. Twin beds, but we could handle that. The view was great, room was much cleaner, bigger, and no mold, mildew, or bad smell! Several staff members speak some English, so that's helpful. All of our requests (room change, held baggage, porter service, etc) were met. Breakfast wasn't great for western items and a little pricey. We gorged ourselves on cold cereal. Dinner was okay. Had a better dinner at Shilin. All 3 hotels (Beihai, Shilin, and Xihai) are pretty equal in our estimation. Shilin perhaps slightly better. We would stay at Xihai again. You can't beat the convenience of staying on the summit area. We stayed at the Taoyaun at the foot of the mountain for 2 days after the Xihai stay and that place was a dump (with a good restaurant). It makes it so much more difficult to stay at the bottom and make that trip up and back every day. There's a physical and time toll if you hike it and a monetary and time one if you use the cable car (it only runs from 7:30am to 4pm). We visited the lower sights when we stayed in the hot springs area. Try to schedule your stay on the summit during the week when the rates are lower and rooms are readily available.
