“One of the best boutique hotels in the world - I'd almost fly there from the UK for a long weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2010

We arrived at Apalta after rearranging our South America trip following a disappointing visit to the Atacama which we cut short.

On arrival at Apalta we knew that we had fallen on our feet - a fantastic lunch on the terrance, an afternoon visiting the cellar and some time to relax set the tone for the next three days.

The food is exceptional and the service is discrete but attentive.

In my experience boutique hotels can be great or disappointing - we have been disappointed when owners have been absent but this was like staying in a private house albeit in the owner's absence. We stayed in Madame's own cabana which was simply but luxuriously furnished. There was no sign of any lowering of standards in Madame's absence.

If only other boutique hotels were like this.

Three days later we were sad to leave but had recovered from the disappointment of our Atacama trip and returned happily to the UK

What a great place and service - You MUST know this winery. The lunch was amazing, the wine tasting unforgetable.

Clos Apalta Lodge is perhaps the best place we have ever stayed; I cannot think of any way in which it could be improved. The 'casitas' were lovely, with ample space and everything one could want. The estate is simply stunning with amazing views. Food was excellent and the accompanying wines were included in the price of dinner. Staff were always there when you needed them but never intrusive.
Cannot recommend this place too highly; a short taxi trip to Santa Cruz where there is an excellent museum.

It's the little touches which made staying at Clos Apalta so wonderful. The casitas were gorgeous but the fact that they came with a fully stocked refrigerator (contents included in price), luxurious toiletries and an iPod sound system with a wide selection of music helped to make them even more cosy. We obviously weren't surprised that the wine was so good, but the fact that the staff, food and pisco sours were excellent too made things even better.

It is located a few miles from Santa Cruz which we planned to visit but once we arrived at Clos Apalta we found it too difficult to leave. Given it only has four casitas it doesn't feel like staying in a hotel - more like the country retreat of a rich and absent relative. We were given the run of the place and had a lovely hike through the vineyard as well as a private tour of the winery. It's not cheap but is a beautiful place to spend a few days.
