“Rustic luxury in a desert town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2010

Wow what a place, in the small town of San Pedro which in the past few years has become quite the backpackers haven, the Awasi hotel is a little oasis of luxury.
A small hotel set in town, built in the traditional adobe architecture, it is stunning.

The rooms are lovely, excellent beds which are prepared exactly to your likeing according to a short special request questionaire filled in before arrival. The bathrooms are very spacious, with indoor and outdoor showers, private courtyards to every room.
The rooms are very cleverly heated to keep out the evening cold (often below freezing) and the adobe building method keeps them cool during the day.

The service is very personalized and excellent. They prepare thing for you, before you realised you actually want them or need them. Every detail of your stay is covered or thought of in advance. Relaxation is a must, with the layed back atmosphere and the high altitude, this is anavoidable.

The young chief is a genius, with heaps of passion and a total love for what he does he surprised us with local dishes of superb quality at every meal. No special request is too much work for this kitchen team and with only 16 guest to cook for at any one time, the individual attention to detail is awesome. We absolutely loved the local hernal tea called rica rica which only grows in this part of the world.

The hotel is an all inclusive package experience, which include excursions with a personal guide assigned to you for the duration of your stay. This is fantastic as your visit is completely tailor made to your interests, fitness level and sence of adventure. Be careful though as the altitude will get the better of you as we quickly found out, regardless of how tough or fit you think you are. However the guides are totally geared up for this and very professional about it.

Being in the resort design profession, we were curious to visit EXPLORA hotel in San Pedro as well, as we had stay at the EXPLORA in Patagonia earlier, we were pleasantly surprised. Awasi is much much nicer, excellent quality all round and a far more personalized service.

Highly recommend Awasi, hands down, a wow experience in a stunning location.

This time I travelled alone with our two preteens, and must say, could have not done a better choice. First, the hotel as such is beatiful and setting perfecly to its environment. Our room was one of the rectangular rooms on the other side of the small road, which despite of small inconveniences with the keys, was perfect for us since we wanted to stay in the same room. The room was plenty big, and additional bathtub and double sinks made three persons stay more confortable. The boys were happy to find an Ipod charger with loudspeaker in the room! The rooms are very nicely decorated, but as someone mentionned here before, the lights were quite dim especially when you try to pack in the evening, otherwise they add nice restful feeling. The restaurant was very nice and fireplace corners cozy place to enjoy my pisco-sour and book while the kids played a game of chess before the dinner. The food was very good, excellent ceviche! We sticked almost every day on the days menu and liked the variety of dishes and the wine list was quite complete; it was nice to try different Chilean wines. The first breakfast was a small shock, since one does not realize in the evening that since the restaurant is a open one, in the morning temperatures it is freezing. But no worry, every seat has a nice blanket and heater was brougth next to us to provide extra heat.
The excursions were great experiences. Our guide Mabel really knew how to handle couple of preteens and designed us perfect outings with lots of activity and wonderful experiences in the nature with bikes, horses and by hiking. One of my sons commented after first day, that he cant even wait what is expecting us the next day. It is amazing how so many natural wonders have concentrated in one place and experiencing them in awasi-way could not get any better!

We stayed in Awasi as part of a long trip around Chile. The Atacama desert was the draw and the hotel was chosen as a result of the travel agent's recommendation as a base for walking in the desert and mountains. And what a superb choice! Awasi is a haven of calm, competence, excellent food and easy, relaxed comfort.

Awasi's menus were excellent. Good food and just the right amount of it.The guide who spent three arduous days' walking with us was arranged by the hotel. Insead of a pre-packaged set of tours on offer, Pierre worked out three different walks that gave us exposure to lots of different scenery. He completed an excellent experience.

100% no hesitation positive recommendation.

Our group of 4 stayed for one night at AWASI before embarking upon the Atacama Crossing 2010, a 250km race across the Atacama Desert. We could not have been looked after better. We were picked up at Calama airport by Sergio who told us so much about the region during the hour's drive to San Pedro. Virginia and her team took over on our arrival and could not have been nicer or more attentive. We had a superb evening meal courtesy of Gonzalo and his team and then spent a very enjoyable afternoon the following day at the Puritama Springs. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we popped back for Sunday lunch a week later (after the race) and were looked after Anita and her team who even provided us with a medical kit to tend to our blisters! Wonderful location and hospitality - very similar in feel to a luxury African game lodge!

Had a fantastic trip to the Atacama and Awasi and agree with most of the other comments of reviewers but we paid extra for a round room and were allocated Room 2 - this room is on the road and we were woken up each evening by people who had had too much to drink finding their way home to other hostels and hotels. It was also impossible to snooze in the afternoon as the hostel nextdoor played rock music at full volume between 3-5pm! That said we had a wonderful time, with very good food and excellent service. It was a shame about the noise - which no-one else reviewing had mentioned. I think it only affects rooms 1 + 2 as the other rooms as slightly further away from the road. We had an excellent guide in Elvira who we highly recommnend if you ask for her - very professional, perfect English and she managed to show us the Atacama without exposure to other tourists. If you love walking this is the guide to choose. The bar staff were excellent too and mixed a mean Pisco Sour and were very friendly and professional. Carolina Ranieri who was managing the property during our stay was exceptional and as the earthquake happened during our stay - she tried to move heaven and earth to get us out of Calama and back to Santiago - we drove in the end as it was just impossible in the time we had available - 1700kms - an amazing drive if anyone has time.

AWASI, Manager at Awasi Atacama - Relais & Chateaux, responded to this review, March 29, 2010
Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for your feedback.

I am really sorry that you didn’t let us know about those noises when you were in Awasi.

If you had mentioned this we would have immediately taken the actions to guaranty that your stay had been perfect.

One of the attractive features of Awasi is that it is located in the middle of the ancient town of San Pedro de Atacama, which allows our guests to experience the real lifestyle and culture of the Atacama people.

The traditional celebrations of the town are also part of this culture.

During February, carnival is celebrated in San Pedro, and these celebrations many times involve people walking the streets singing and of course making noise, although they are very reasonable when they are approached and asked for silence.

I really want to apologize again for the inconvenience.

Warmest regards,

Carolina Raineri

My wife and I got married on Valentines Day weekend just a couple of weeks ago. While she was busy planning the wedding, my sole responsibility was planning the honeymoon. I stumbled upon Awasi and the Atacama on Travel and Leisure. As we were looking for something a little out of the box, Awasi seemed perfect....It was.

The experience was one in a lifetime. The desert landscape bordered by the Andes is breathtaking. The hotel experience is five stars. We enjoyed every moment at Awasi and will never forget this trip. I would recommend this destination to anyone who appreciates the beauty of nature and the chance to experience a world that is quite different to what many of us are used to. The tours were dynamic and the options were very diverse. We enjoyed horseback riding, a canyon hike to hot springs, and floating on the Chilean equivalent to the Dead Sea. If you have the chance, you will forever cherish this vacation.

This was undoubtedly the highlight of our 3 week/ 7 hotel trip to Chile & Argentina. It has all been said before, but this hotel is wonderful. From the very friendly and helpful welcome to the care for us when we departed, we could not fault Awasi.
On arrival we were given breakfast (not expected, but very welcome) and we then met our personal guide for our 4 day stay. Elvira was excellent and perfectly matched our interests and relative lack of stamina with the excursions available. Our driver, Henri, was also great fun and a brilliant driver. The trips were mind boggling, awesome beauty, and the picnics (in beautiful quiet locations) were wonderful.
Food and service were both first rate. A good choice of courses (one selected for the day with alternatives always available) and wine. A lovely atmosphere round the tables, with a fire lit to sit around. You can be private if you wish, but somehow the sense of wellbeing encourages you to chat to other guests.
Rooms are spacious, albeit the lights are a bit dim. We found it quiet at night, though others did mention noises from dogs and a nearby campsite.
It is a short walk into the interesting and safe little town of San Pedro which has both touristy souvenir shops plus some tasteful art and craft places. I recommend "El Mano".
We felt that the management and staff here really did put our care and wellbeing first and there was no sense of elitism. We are ordinary "brits", not wealthy, but felt very much at home.
