We stayed for five nights at the Hotel La Aldea in January. This hotel figures in the 'Budget Hotels of the World' book and the pictures of its adobe walls and architect designed space were undeniably attractive. Frommer's was enthusiastic about its 'cabanas' (cylindrical cabins on two floors) so that's what we booked. It took some time to find La Aldea as it's off the beaten track (even for San Pedro). Initial impressions were positive, as one drives into a rather nice expanse with a decent size pool one the right, cabanas on the left and the main hotel ahead. The common areas show the architect's touch but the lounge area encourages looking at rather than sitting down in. The advertised Internet area remained resolutely unplugged. The cabanas showed poor attention to detail with light fittings falling off the wall and rather threadbare carpets. There was also a total lack of any wardrobe and chest of drawer space so all our clothes had to be set out on the twin beds in the second bedroom. The water supply was erratic but that's probably the rule rather than the exception in such an arid area. The biggest disappointment was the food. The food served at dinner had no choice of dishes and was quite simply dreadful and overpriced. Fortunately, San Pedro itself has a huge range of eateries, all of which were a) better and b) cheaper than the hotel. Finally, be wary of the dust track from La Aldea to the main strip of San Pedro if you wear contact lenses!
