We stayed at Don Tomas to tour the Atacama Desert. The hotel was very cute, clean and cozy. When we arrived at the hotel, we were impressed with the service. The staff at the reception were very friendly and helpful, especially the bearded gentleman who looked to be the head manager. He seemed to love his job which was refreshing to see.
The rooms were average, maybe a bit tight. The beds were comfortable and clean. The room floors could get a bit cold at night. The covers provided adequate warmth, and, in fact, were quite cozy.
The bathroom was quite small, but clean. To get hot water, we had to let the water run for a few minutes. This seemed to depend on the amount of hot water used by everyone at the hotel. So, if you're the last one to wake up to take a shower in the morning, be prepared to wait for hot water.
The hotel location is only about a 5 minute walk from the centre of town where one can easily find good restaurants and souvenir shops. Though at night, street lights do not illuminate sections of the road, which was a bit scary.
The food is not gourmet, but is satisfactory. You can always find hot coffee and tea in the morning. The dining room can get quite crowded, especially for breakfast. So, be sure to get there early. Sometimes they run out of hot food. There is limited choice for dinner, but that's okay since there are plenty of nice restaurants in town.
The Atacama Desert is extremely dry, and the hotel provides a complementary bottle of water for guests each day since it is not recommended to drink the tap water. When we got back from a tour one afternoon, we found that they forgot to leave new water bottles in our room. When we rang up the front desk, the staff were really prompt in complying with our request. We accidentally broke a drinking glass, and confessed to the staff immediately. They were very understanding, and did not charge us for it.
There was free wireless internet available in the lounge. We were able to access it from our room as well, though it would cut out occasionally due to signal range.
All-in-all, it was quite a pleasant stay. We would definitely stay there again if we visit San Pedro again.
