So, we were really looking at Tierra Atacama as the BEST place to stay in San Pedro and missed the great JETSETTER promotion which was running (USD595.00 per person, per night) :-( But having been on holiday in Chile for a month and staying at some very nice Boutique Hotels, we eventually opted for another accommodation experience.
Our research pointed us to CASA SOLCOR and reviewed other guests' comments here on Trip Advisor and decided this will be our abode. I began communication with Natalia, who was very prompt and efficient with the replies and answers to my questions.
Natalia recommended we take Licancabur Transfer for the 1h 20m ride between Calama and San Pedro. We made this reservation via email from Santiago airport before we got on the plance and they replied right away. Upon arrival in Calama on name was on the board and paid the 12000p ticket price to San Pedro (i.e. US$24.00) It seems most people do this and there a transfer reservation is recommended. The bus will drop you directly to your hotel. (Can I suggest you avoid taking luggage that requires pulling with wheels, as the terrain is either dirt or stones)
We were the last of the bus passengers to be dropped off and I was looking at all the various types of accommodation where people were dropped off. CASA SOLCOR was the only one that had someone waiting at the gate with a big smile to warmly receive us. Meet "Maca" (now resigned from Casa Solcor)
We were shown around the "adobe" style house and was told the house rules. Maca gave us a map of San Pedro and wrote down some recommended activities to do during our 5 night stay.
What I did not expect, is that we would be alone in the house, except for the mornings. We walked into town on the VERY dusty road. (a flashlight is essential) An easy walk to Caracoles where we had dinner at ADOBE, LA ESTAKA, LA CASANO and BLANCO during our stay.
On the down side. The house is ADOBE style with no central heating. There were two gas heaters, one shared between the two back rooms, making the rooms VERY COLD in the night. And when gas runs out and nobodies around to replace it you freeze. There is construction going on with the addition of another house providing 4 new rooms and there is a management transition with Maca who more or less LEFT and Natalia had not yet arrived to take up the job on 1st July. Im certain with Natalia there, everything will be perfect.
The altitude did not pose a problem for us and walking back to the case in the dark of night was awesome under the amazing starry night. Avoid trips here during full moon as you will miss the beauty of the night sky.
We became friends with another couple at the house and together we rented a car from someone's father (a junk) and did our own private tours to the lakes, salt flats and lunar valley. But the most amazing tour, was the only organized one we did. Booked the English tour with SPACE (its own review to follow) This was the highlight of the trip.
The Atacama is an amazing place and where is stay is unimportant, compared to the awesomeness of the environment around you.
What majesty. An extremely spiritual place.
